Best steak tacos ever.
I don't normally love Mexican, but I adore Taqueria! You can really taste the food because it is not smothered in piles of greasy cheese - and it tastes fresh and authentic.
I especially love eating out back in the summer - the restaurant owners have a penchant for classic rock and Mexican polka, which I love, but it can be a bit loud inside. Other than that, it is the perfect start to a weekend on Friday night!
Awesome mexican food.
I'd been told by friends about the great authentic food and super Tecate beer. Then I'd seen a few nasty reviews that focused on the poor service. My friends were right. Food and drink is spot on. Portions may seem a little small but the price is so low that you can mix and match.
As for thw service, people the place is going for a chilled out canteen vibe. The staff are young and easy going. It stresses the authentic nature of the food and no substitution policy on the menu. Just exhale and enjoy. This is the anti-Chillis.
All I can say is that I will be back and often.
Fish Tacos to die for....
I have read about terrible service at the Taqueria, but I never noticed it while there. Maybe it is because I am so preoccupied by the fantastic fish tacos. BTW, the last time I was there, my husband and I were greeted warmly by the owners, and I was with another couple with 2 children. They were very friendly to the children. The food is delicious, it is BYOB, and welcome kids, which is becoming rare in Downtown Jersey City.

LOUSY CUSTOMER SERVICE. I agree with lucabenti's review.... too much attitude especially that MOBY guy... ordered fish taco and asked for lettuce instead of cabbage he said no i would have to buy lettuce salad for $1.50...which is so ridiculous!!! the owner/staff are curt... a change of attitude would make this place better.... food is ok a little bit salty though....
Worst attitude ever. This place used to have has great food. The food is cheap and the portions are just right. But food alone does not a great restaurant make. The owners/staff really seem to have a "too cool for school" attitude, to the point that you wonder who is the customer. Their motto must be "the customer is always willing to put up with attitude.". And... reserving tables for "4 or more" in a taco shop is absurd. I go there from time to time for the food...but this will never be a great spot until the owners learn to lighten up and be nice to people. That Moby guy too. OH...when you go...ask if they have fajitas...that really winds them up. Try Bubbys' Burritos down the street. Quality isn't as good...but much less attitude.
Best Mexican food in the East Coast.
I was visiting in NJ and coming from San Diego California, did not expect to find real Mexican food. What a surprise! Taqueria Downtown is a great little place to eat. real authentic Mexican food. great tacos and tostadas, my favorite were the carnitas tostadas. Couldn't believe the price either, really cheap.
highly recommend this place, the owners are a cute couple too, very nice.
