Editorial Review for Shampoo Avenue B – by Joanna Prisco

In Short
Guitar riffs echo onto the sidewalk outside this rocking sliver of a salon; the sound intensifies inside where a giant, spray-painted logo and funky paintings by local artists communicate the non-traditional vibe. Clearly, artistic expression is the overarching theme--and at the five cutting stations, stylists eschew looks from TV for more street-savvy and sexy cuts, as well as creative colors and highlights and innovative straightening techniques.

Insider Tips

On the Menu

Straightening treatments are comprehensive. In addition to Japanese ($400-plus), a new Brazilian technique is also offered for $300. With an all-natural shampoo and neutralizer, stylists pledge that it's less damaging than other metods, and it lasts three months. Traditionalists can still get the chemical relaxer ($100).

The Extras

Hair extensions are available, but require a consultation beforehand.

Save Money

Dig the art on the wall? You're in luck--it's for sale and, for the most part, is affordable (usually starting around $40).

I am writing this review for my Mom Nell who is in NYC visiting. She recently got a cut/color from Harley and was thrilled with the results. Everyone agree that her hair is FINALLY the perfect color and got fantastic cut that is flattering and that suits her face. She is 65 and it just goes to show that a top notch stylist can do everything from a very classic look to cutting egde/modern. My Mom is now going around telling her friends how important an excellent cut/color is and it's funny how happy she is with her new look and especially when she is complimented. Great job and thanks for making my Mom look and feel great!

Pros: Educated and informative staff. It's all about the customer and making them happy!

I used to have my haircut at Oscar Bond salon, and followed her when she started st Shampoo. ALthough the salon was nice, it was small and kinda out of the way for me to get to. THANK GOD she moved again and is now working at DE DERARDINI'S. Its on 21st between 6th and 7th and close to so many trains. I went there once already and it is def s step up. They serve wine and espresso and gave a wonderful scalp massage at the shampoo bowl. I was happy that the receptionist at Shampoo even gave me the number 212-967-0927. That was nice of her!

Pros: Carly was working there

Cons: Now she isn't
