Editorial Review for Frederick's Downtown – by Julia Israel
In Short
At this relaxed outpost of the uptown Frederick's, waiters ditch ties and jackets for a casual look: pink button-downs. Diners sink into sea-foam green booths to share plates of French-inspired tapas. The menu is divided into simple categories--tapas, appetizers, pastas, fish and meat--and features the chef's signature specialties from the original location. The trio of crudo, a mix of raw salmon, tuna and yellowtail, is a particular house favorite.

It was always Carrie Bradshaw's live-long dream to live in Paris. She imagined herself luxuriously shopping in Louis Vitton, sipping coffee in cute French cafes, and smoking outside as she admired the Eiffel Tower. And towards the end of the series, when she started dating Aleksandr Petrovsky, she got the chance to move to Paris. At first, she was ecstatic. But after living there for a little bit, she found herself lonely and wishing for the warmth of New York City and her friends. Eating at Frederick's Downtown is a similar experience - the food and atmosphere is unbelievably great, but it is lacking the warmth and welcoming experience of that many other NYC restaurants provide. The service seems a little detached and aloof. Otherwise, I would recommend the Tuna Carpaccio with Eggplant Caviar, Toasts Point, Soy-Sesame Emulsion. Single-handedly the best dish of all, which includes all the main dishes.

This was the single worst dining experience I have ever had in New York (and I live here!). The waitress took 25 minutes TWICE to bring us drinks. The table next to us broke a glass on the floor and they never came to sweep up the glass. We finally complained about everything and they said one of our drinks would be complimentary, and alas, when the bill came, nothing was gratis. Waitstaff so dense. Hate this place.
