The Scene
A night at Zenkichi can feel like a scene out of a 1940s paperback mystery. There's no sign on the wood-paneled exterior, just a light over the door, and a pretty hostess working the rope guards the stairs to the dining room. Inside lies a twisting maze of dark-wood booths that resemble private dining cars on a train. Billyburg couples can get cozy by closing the blinds, their only connection to the outside world a call button to summon the waitress.
The Food
The setting may sound gimmicky, but the elegant, small Japanese plates are deadly serious--and seriously delicious. Creamy homemade tofu bespeckled with edamame beans sets an appropriately dreamy tone, and firm Japanese eggplant share a broth bath with pillow-like rice noodles. A mysterious foil pouch unwraps to reveal an earthy mix of salmon and chanterelles, and ice-cold grapefruit gelee--super-tart and served in the citrus's scooped-out skin--makes a nail-biting climax.

Insider Tips
Family StyleThe small plates are portioned to be shared; four or five should satiate a party of two.
What to DrinkOnly beer and sake are available. Try the Akitabare Shunsetsu Nama sake ($10), which has a pleasing hint of banana flavor.
Know Before You GoBe sure to make reservations, as the place fills up quickly, and there's no bar to pass the time while waiting for a table.

this place is so cool...you walk in and it's like a maze of dim light and bamboo and mirrors...we got a private booth with a button to press to summon our waiter...really unusual and delicious Japanese food (no sushi)... really romantic and exotic.
Pros: ambience, food
Cons: can't think of any

I took my boyfriend here a few weeks ago for a surprise celebration dinner. I was worried he would not find anything to eat considering he is a pretty plain guy. He not only found something to eat, but also agreed that it was one on the best and coolest restaurants he has ever been to! The private booths, excellent and quick service, food, saki and beer selections-what else could you ask for? You must go, it'll be an experience you won't forget!
Pros: Private booths, On-call service, Romantic
Cons: Nothing!
