What People Are Saying About Against The Grain

In Short – The apple doesn't fall far from the tree in the case of this beer bar, which inherited its rustic-chic from adjacent restaurant, Grape and Grain. Bare brick walls and tin ceilings the color of silver tarnish are barely lit by filament lightbulbs, and a tall communal table in the middle invites friends-and-family gatherings. The beer list is small, with hand-selected draughts, cans, bottles and bigger bottles--the container denoted by little illustrations--that range from light Bitburger to very dark Old Engine Oil.
WORST PLACE EVER!
by Robbie223
Me and my 3 buddies went here for my friends last night in NYC before he moved back to Israel and we were shocked with how rude the waiter was at Against the Grain.
I would never recommend anyone to ever go here. Not only did the waiter make fun of my friend, but he gave us the wrong drinks, had an awful attitude, and completely ruined the entire night.
I don't know who else works at this bar, but the people this bar hires (whom I have delft with) -- do not reflect well on the owners.
The waiter also took forever to give us appetizers and beer. If you want to have a mediocre time in a pretentious closet sized bar, with weak ambiance, and awful staff-- you may want to come here.
Otherwise, against the grain can go @#$#@$ themselves.
- Pros: worst place ever
- Cons: worst waiter, rude, pretentious, small, empty, expensive
Great wine/beer bar with great food as well
by roger13
"Girls and boys, if you like small, intimate, local places go to Grape and Grain (or Against the Grain it's sister right next door). The food, staff, wine, beer are all tremendous. My girlfriend had my surprise birthday party in the smaller Against the Grain with the communal table but both are so great. It is usually full (bc it's the best) but if you plan ahead you can get a few drinks, then some dinner for a really great price. I can't single out one thing (except the braised short ribs!) bc everything is fantastic. Give it a try - I highly recommend it."
- Pros: Wine and beer selection at very good prices
- Cons: kinda small
Great beer and great bartenders!
by philthyphil68
My friends and I have been to Against the Grain many times and always had fun. The beer selection is fantastic and it's not the usual choices so you can make great discoveries there. Molly has been our bartender the last few times and she is the best. Friendly, amazing beer knowledge and super cute. Just the nicest girl ever. We'll be back again soon!
- Pros: Dark, quiet and homey.
- Cons: Small.
