What People Are Saying About The Waverly Inn

Getting Inn – "Are there just two of you?" the wafer-thin host asks. Speechless, I nod. Just like the many hopefuls who follow, I don't know a friend who knows a friend who has Graydon Carter's cell number, but I keep my cool, unlike the high-roller and his much-younger wife who unsubtly attempt to slip the host a bribe for a better table (denied). What they fail to grasp is that the tables by the door are actually the best: They're right next to a toasty fireplace, and though ogling Harvey Weinstein, Gwyneth Paltrow or even the pretty wildlife (B-listers) of the back garden is out,…

Editor's Tips

What to Drink:
The French- and Italian-heavy wine list features few bottles under $30, but by-the-glass options include a flowery Vernnacia ($11) and a mellow Syrah ($12).
When to Go:
Unless you're a pal of Graydon's, nabbing a reservation is tough, as the phone number is unlisted. However, showing up at 6pm during the week is your best.
The Extras:
Gwenyth Paltrow, Jimmy Fallon, Harvey Weinstein and Gina Gershon are just a few of the big names regularly spotted in the grand middle dining room, and Carter himself makes near-nightly appearances.
ambiance
89.06000137329102% positive
  1. The food parallels the atmosphere and the service is attentive and casual.
  2. The front bar room has a cozy fireplace with a few dining tables that are "the choice" spots during the winter months.
  3. If you manage NOT to get upset by the overly pretentious hostess at the door, you might actually like the decor in this place.
  4. This restaurant receives a five from me due to its ambience, small size, great food and respectful staff.
  5. The dingy atmosphere only makes it worse that the annoying hosts preside over 30 empty tables as they make the pretentious masses wait for hours to be served outdated gastropub fare.
  6. Really, this is the place you would take a friend of many years, where you might sit in the cozy, bistroesque setting, sip over a great selection of wine and be treated to a solid dose of genuinely attentive, if even not completely ironed out, service.
  7. As you enter the restaurant, the decor is warm and inviting.
  8. The main dining room is an antique, wood-floored and panelled treasure of cozy banquettes with appropriately dim wall lighting.
  9. The service is attentive - Curtis is my favorite server - and the ambience/guests are consistently entertaining, if not downright funny.
  10. Yes it is a place to see and be seen but that is because the people you want to see appreciate its ambience and its consistently good food and service.
  11. The trademark of the decor is the famous Edward Sorel mural stretching the length of the room depicting famous caricatures in pop history.
  12. The back room was quite comfortable to dine in and we did see Mary J. Blige so I guess the celebs do still show up from time to time.
  13. cozy, entertaining and to-die-for biscuits
  14. this is what you make it, good food and atmosphere, wouldnt bother coming for a drink, far too expensive and they dont carry most things, but the food is different gravy, never had any trouble with tables, superb place.
  15. Try Freeman's on Freeman's Alley (LES) for somewhere with a similar atmosphere but with friendly and welcoming staff and wonderful food.
  16. The atmosphere was fun, the crowd was good; however, the bartender was a nightmare.
dessert
83.33000183105469% positive
  1. The clam chowder was cooked perfectly, with tender clams and rich creams.
  2. The dessert waiter, and older gentleman with much more grace and a sense of customer service was much nicer, more engaging and less pretentious and the Bananas Foster was delicious.
  3. The bisquits are mouth watering, the crab cakes and artichoke are not to be missed, the mac and cheese is sinfully delicious and the service is spot on, once you have a seat.
  4. just wanted outta there and didn't have dessert (and i NEVER don't order dessert).
  5. Highlights on the menu include two flawless tartares(salmon and tuna), the famous seasonal black or white truffle mac'n cheese, a perfect Berkshire pork chop with baked apple, luscious wild salmon, and a bountiful chicken-pot pie.
  6. The mousse we had for dessert was very good.
drinks
78.33000183105469% positive
  1. Great bar, great bartenders who are all personality.
  2. Waverly Inn is where I bring out of town friends who want to see a part of "new york" night life straight out of that all too famous cable show based in nyc, but also where I end up when I just want an expertly crafted drink, a little humor and some good
  3. Perhaps a failed actor or maybe just a bad barman, he spoke to other customers about us occupying seats at the bar.
  4. the bar area got a bit crowded with icky high maintenance chicks and dudes, but hey.
  5. food is decent but by no means special and the wine list was a joke.
  6. this is what you make it, good food and atmosphere, wouldnt bother coming for a drink, far too expensive and they dont carry most things, but the food is different gravy, never had any trouble with tables, superb place.
  7. The drinks I have to say were really good.
  8. The bar area (albeit small) is a great place to mingle and the selection and service in the bar are both good.
  9. The front bar room has a cozy fireplace with a few dining tables that are "the choice" spots during the winter months.
  10. the bartender was gracious and quick an the cocktails were delicious.
  11. But really the best place to sit is at the bar where you can watch the people flock in and listen to the bartenders running "new york" style stand up routine as they mix truly impeccable drinks.
  12. would recommend drinks here so you can see the inside but don't bother with a meal.
  13. great place to eat at the bar, the bartenders treat loyal customers very well and the food is excellent.
  14. We paid an eye-watering amount for two disgusting glasses of wine which the bartender practically threw at us in his distaste at having to serve two non-New York, non-social climbers.
  15. Really, this is the place you would take a friend of many years, where you might sit in the cozy, bistroesque setting, sip over a great selection of wine and be treated to a solid dose of genuinely attentive, if even not completely ironed out, service.

  1. The food is good, the bisquits outstanding.
  2. After the nasty host and the mediocre food that we saw going out.
  3. Bartender is a loser but food is quite good.
  4. Delucie's biscuits are to-die-for, and the bananas foster is the perfect ending to a flaky and delicious dover sole.
  5. The bisquits are mouth watering, the crab cakes and artichoke are not to be missed, the mac and cheese is sinfully delicious and the service is spot on, once you have a seat.
  6. The dessert waiter, and older gentleman with much more grace and a sense of customer service was much nicer, more engaging and less pretentious and the Bananas Foster was delicious.

  8. This restaurant receives a five from me due to its ambience, small size, great food and respectful staff.
  9. . . . The food is excellent, with the truffle macaroni being my favorite thing on the planet!
  10. The food was not impressive, yet when I asked the bartenders how certain dishes were, and they told me to get the most expensive dishes, saying that here, the dishes are original.
  11. Try Freeman's on Freeman's Alley (LES) for somewhere with a similar atmosphere but with friendly and welcoming staff and wonderful food.

  18. The portions, while small, are not horrible but are far from delicious.
  19. this is what you make it, good food and atmosphere, wouldnt bother coming for a drink, far too expensive and they dont carry most things, but the food is different gravy, never had any trouble with tables, superb place.
  20. liked the Dover sole more b/c it was a "meatier" fish and I tend to favour these types of fish anyway.
  21. You have to order everything all at once, otherwise the chef will not oblige, and until you order everything you are not allowed bread or water.
  22. Expensive food with average quality.
  23. The food parallels the atmosphere and the service is attentive and casual.
  24. The frisee salad is perfect and light one day, and the next day it can be weighty and overly dressed.
  25. The bread looked good, but I wasn't that interested in it (not usually interested in bread at most places).
  26. Elitist deceitful staff, food is good but underwhelming
  27. The food, however, was excellent although not particularly innovative.
  28. the old ye waverly was the perfect neighborhood spot - great food, great staff and a great
  29. We order almost every appetizer there was and I ordered the Dover Sole which was one of the tastiest fish dishes I've had in a long time.
  30. would recommend drinks here so you can see the inside but don't bother with a meal.
  31. The staff was great, even to the point of being flexible to hold a course as we wanted to slow the meal down a bit.

  36. Of course you need to "know someone" to get a table, but even that doesnt guarentee you a good meal if you are not a regular on Page Six.

Lot of Hype, Doesn't Deliver

by jesseberg

I went here for a few drinks after dinner in the west village I had three glasses of amaro and my gf had two cocktails and the bill was $75, haha. I guess $15 a drink is not unheard of in nyc muchless west vill. The overall decour was meh. The service was good and the wine list laughable.

Great time!!

by bonniez

A friend in town randomly booked us in for dinner and we had the BEST time!! The staff was great, even to the point of being flexible to hold a course as we wanted to slow the meal down a bit. We had Oysters, Sea Bass, Tuna Tartare, Steak special and a wicked cheese cake to end it. The wine was well paired, we went for a balance of budget and desire. We sat in the back room which has a dual feel of green house and living room. It seemed as though we had a staff of six serving us, everyone was helpful and engaging. Maybe we just got lucky, but I'd go back! Not to mention David Spade, Selma Hyack and Dutchess Fergie were all there - what a nifty night!! Thank you Waverly Inn!

Pretty People in a nasty place

by Hollie B

Having eaten at some beautiful places all over the world I was bitterly disappointed and embarassed by the Waverly Inn. Don't bother is my recommendation! The wine list is ridiculous so we just did cocktails, can live with that! However, I have never felt so bullied into finishing my meal quickly, I actually had a bus boy clear my guests plates as each finished and then stand over my shoulder watching for me to finish my last mouthfull and put my fork down! No would you like a coffee or another drink, tick, you're outta here! So much potential and such a waste of such a beautiful venue.

very bad experience overall

by ana carolina

We made our reservation through the concierge in our hotel that made sure to reserve us a table IN the restaurant. When we arrived they gave us a table by the bar next to the hostess stand. The bar had over 30 people standing waiting for a table. Next to us there were 3 other tables empty because nobody would dare sit in this horrible place.

The customers that were standing kept on bumping on our heads all the time.

We ordered our food "macaroni and cheese with white truffle' in eleven minutes our food was served. Not even enough time to cook the pasta. Absolutely mediocre!!! In 40 minutes we were in and out.

Sorrounded by standing customers and empty tables we had the worst saturday night. What a deceiving place!!!!

Hall of shame

by matchb3108

I do not even know where to start.

Reservation at 9pm, we sat at 10:30pm. Rude and obnoxious service. Expensive food with average quality. The wine list is totally absurd: No wine below $100; a couple around $500 and the majority above $500. A glass of Sauternes priced at $600, yes just a glass.

I was with some friends visiting from London.

What an embarrassment ...

Same your time, save your money, just skip the place.
