Editorial Review for Flatbush Farm – by Erin Behan
The Scene
The picturesque dining room, with its impossibly high ceiling, stark white walls and dark wood contrast seating resembles an old-time daguerreotype. A few farm implements grace the walls, but the name is mostly a reference to the "as often as possible" use of organic ingredients from local sources. Servers and patrons epitomize casual Brooklyn chic.
The Food
You may be ready for a farm-worthy workout after chowing on this hearty fare. For starters, a mushroom spatzle delivers not-too-too-heavy comfort in a light, herb-inflected broth, and a slightly overdressed beet and escarole salad tips gracefully toward the rich with a wedge of blue cheese. Of the farm-fresh entrees, the braised lamb shoulder melts at the touch of a fork and arrives with flavorful seasonal veggies, while the menu's salmon cakes are a nice break from the ubiquitous crab and have a pleasing texture and flavor. Desserts aren't shy--the rich chocolate tart would please hungry agriculturists.

I generally like this place. The food is good. The design of the space is good. But the service is HORRID! I was there for brunch recently, and we were tag teamed by a waitress and a waiter. The waiter delivered our food while holding what appeared to be a plastic bag of garbage in one hand. I can't believe that it was, but please put the bag down before delivering food! The waitress came to check in on us every few minutes, and began to clear the plates while half of us were still eating (a big pet peeve of mine that happens almost everywhere, so I try to ignore it). I couldn't ignore the fact that she reach over the plate of one of my friends, who was in mid bite, to clear the table. She then put the check down without asking if we were done, and came to check on the bill every two minutes, even though we were one of three occupied tables. I wish I could like this place more, and I wish someone would retrain the staff.

Dinner at Flatbush Farm is just a great all around dining experience. Personable, attentive waitstaff, serving wonderfully seasoned, nicely cooked, fresh ingredients in a sociable yet relaxing atmosphere at terrifically reasonable prices. The most compelling selling point about this busy local joint, for me, is the outdoor dining area in the back. On a clear and cool night, eating out back at this place makes for a perfect evening.
Pros: outdoor dining area, food, personable service
Cons: long wait times
