Editorial Review for Sticky Rice – by Justin Hartung
The Scene
The smallish space blends deconstructed design with cheeky flourishes. The room's support archways are left exposed, while the mini-chandeliers get wrapped in plastic. A brick wall painted with pink flowers makes a playful backdrop for the cool-as-a-cucumber neighborhood crowd. Service is chatty--so much so that it can be hard to round up a check.
The Food
The restaurant's namesake gets four renditions, including a surprisingly subtle brown rice, beans and mushrooms mix that perfectly complements the Thai-fusion fare. Robust prawns deep-fried in a crunchy cone-shaped wrapper make an inviting warm-up, but bland cabbage salad fussed up with pork cracklings can only be considered an off-key duet. Vibrant panang curry tosses kaffir lamb leaves with generous chunks of braised duck, while fresh ginger uplifts barbecued short ribs. Loaded with calamari, sticky rice and a lobster tail, paella more than earns its signature-dish status, and, finally, light-as-air flan finishes the meal with globe-trotting elan.

apparently they differentiate their weekday staff vs friday staff, b/c i called to make a reservation for friday at 830pm on tuesday and called again on wednesday to add one more person to my party, and on friday 2hrs before my reservation, someone at the restaurant called to tell me that they should've never made me the 830 reservation and apparently that they only do 8 or 10pm and their weekday staff had made a mistake. and then the hostess made it very clear to me that i needed to be out by 10 and i replied saying I think that should be ok. but the hostess insisted on saying no we need you to be out by 10. and i replied again i think that should be doable but i am being told this now. and then the hostess got irritated and said we don't want any problem tonight so i am going to cancel your reservation and hung up on the call.

the first time i went there, it was a really enjoyable experience. the food is pretty good. the second time i made it for friday night which i guess is pretty busy time for them, the hostess was pretty rude.
Pros: great value
Cons: bad service
