The Scene
The smallish space blends deconstructed design with cheeky flourishes. The room's support archways are left exposed, while the mini-chandeliers get wrapped in plastic. A brick wall painted with pink flowers makes a playful backdrop for the cool-as-a-cucumber neighborhood crowd. Service is chatty--so much so that it can be hard to round up a check.

The Food
The restaurant's namesake gets four renditions, including a surprisingly subtle brown rice, beans and mushrooms mix that perfectly complements the Thai-fusion fare. Robust prawns deep-fried in a crunchy cone-shaped wrapper make an inviting warm-up, but bland cabbage salad fussed up with pork cracklings can only be considered an off-key duet. Vibrant panang curry tosses kaffir lamb leaves with generous chunks of braised duck, while fresh ginger uplifts barbecued short ribs. Loaded with calamari, sticky rice and a lobster tail, paella more than earns its signature-dish status, and, finally, light-as-air flan finishes the meal with globe-trotting elan.

This restraurant is great. It's so cheap and the food is good. I got five appetizers to go for about thirty dollars. What's also great is that if you dine in, you can bring your own beer or wine which is different for sure.

The Lower East Side is a great neighborhood to live and work, but there is a lack of healthy and yummy food for lunch. It is difficult to find a meal under $15 and I ask myself what am I paying for?! To go cartons? - maybe.... So Sticky Rice has decent Thai food (myself being part Thai), but their lunch special only applies if you sit in, not pick up or take out. I probably would sit in too, if I weren't working a few doors down, but even still it is freezing at their establishment, during this time of year (December) and nothing is worse than eating in the cold. The large and heavy draped curtain over the doorway IS NOT HELPING. I have ordered from them a handful of times (for pick up), but could not take advantage of the Lunch Special ($7.50). So the waiter told me they have Daily Specials, which were $6.95. I happily ordered these for weeks, to then be told today, they no longer offer it for take out. What is the deal? I would be happy to order from them 3 or more times out of the week, but because they cannot make up their mind on how much they want to charge their local patrons for lunch - I will give them my business no longer. Overall they are a bit snarky and rude. In a time where businesses are failing - they could try a little harder. OHHH! And I forgot to mention - their Christmas decor is dried up and in need of changing. They have a large branch in a vase with mildewy water, but refuse to clean it, change, or buy another fixture. So please don't eat at the bar, as a glimpse of the putrid water may turn your stomach. The last time I went in they had a piece of cloth loosely tied around the vase to obviously hide the filthy vase - UNSUCCESSFUL. I hope they read this and make some changes; customers are not blind and do really care and notice.

apparently they differentiate their weekday staff vs friday staff, b/c i called to make a reservation for friday at 830pm on tuesday and called again on wednesday to add one more person to my party, and on friday 2hrs before my reservation, someone at the restaurant called to tell me that they should've never made me the 830 reservation and apparently that they only do 8 or 10pm and their weekday staff had made a mistake. and then the hostess made it very clear to me that i needed to be out by 10 and i replied saying I think that should be ok. but the hostess insisted on saying no we need you to be out by 10. and i replied again i think that should be doable but i am being told this now. and then the hostess got irritated and said we don't want any problem tonight so i am going to cancel your reservation and hung up on the call.
