The Scene – After enduring the bustle of Times Square, entering Hagi can feel a little like going down the rabbit hole. The windowless basement space, minimally furnished with TVs and menus on the walls, looks more like an office break room than a restaurant, an impression reinforced by its postwork drinking crowd. But the friendly staff, cheap booze and tasty snacks quickly make the surreal surroundings feel familiar. – – The Food – You may think you know bar food, but unless you've been hanging out in Tokyo's izakayas--watering holes with cheap grub--the menu will…
It doesn’t worth to try it.

I saw the reviews were very good so I went there but I was very disappointed. Nothing was special. It doesn’t worth to try it.
Food was okay. The price was cheap but the portion was really small, too. I had to order many foods. When I got the check, I didn’t think it was cheap.
Great underground NYC hangout

I went last night w/ a friend and had a great time. Entered about 6pm on a Wed night and there were only 4 seats available. We sat at the bar and enjoyed hot sake and quickly (less than 10 mins) got our orders.... Kimchee, pork dumpling, octopus ball, kobe beef skewers, and a large plate of napa cabbage, bean sprouts, pork belly in miso sauce. It was more than enough to leave us full. Great for sharing and the bill was less than $38 including 2 large carafes of sake!
- Pros: fast service, great, inexpensive food/drinks
- Cons: very crowded, limited seating

Japanese restaurant ... Midtown location ... middle of tourist area. You're thinking high prices and low quality, right? No way! This place is amazingly good and reasonably priced. I have been living here for years and I had never heard of the place until it was featured on Tony Bourdain's show. Just remember, it's not a sushi bar (they don't even sell sushi). It's noisy, crowded, and you will probably have to wait for a table. It's well worth it. Japanese New Yorkers appear to have been keeping this place to themselves.
- Pros: Prices. Food.
- Cons: Line to get in.
The Details on Sake Bar Hagi
What to Drink:
The mildly sweet house sake, Ozeki, is a steal at $7 per large bottle, and pitchers of Kirin cost a measly $10. Sochu drinks soured with flavors like green apple and plum offer a kickier alternative.
When to Go:
The place fills up quickly after 6:30pm, so get there early if you don't want to wait.
Look Good:
Leave your cell number with the host, and go for a drink nearby until your table is ready.
Know Before You Go:
To find Hagi, head through the barely marked door next to Iroha sushi bar and down a flight of stairs.
