Editorial Review for Black Pearl – by Erin Behan
The Scene
An impossibly high ceiling dwarfs the loose seafood shack theme that plays out below. The long, brightly lit room approaches jarring with its red walls and yellow beadboard, and a sedate crowd sets a suburban scene in wooden booths and tables. Near the entrance sits the restaurant's sizeable bar offset by a faux-shingled roof and North Atlantic bric-a-brac.
The Food
The lengthy menu of seafood favorites seems almost out of place on the grimy stretch of 26th Street. Still, the oysters arrive fresh: Special West Coast Kumamotos taste especially rich and briny, while the local Bluepoints deliver a mild finish. The stuffed-to-bursting lobster roll, served in a top-cut hot dog bun, will please purists for its inclusion of lobster, mayo and nothing else. Fish-and-chips, however, disappoint; the cod's cornmeal coating quickly loses crunch. Missing the New England shores? Clip on the dentist-style bib and dig into a trio of steamed lobster, mussels and clams.

Insider Tips
What to DrinkThere's a mix of high-priced wine (most glasses at $9 a glass) and martinis ($13 for specialty), but beer is the most true to the shack theme. Keep it local with a Brooklyn Brewery beer or a Bluepoint, all $6.
Know Before You GoThere are a few entree options for non-seafaring diners including roasted chicken, strip steak and a burger.
Fun FactBlack Pearl originally operated out of a bar on Avenue A.

This place is great for a casual date and some good, reasonably priced seafood. Four of us went there on a Friday night and were seated right away without reservations. The oysters were top notch and we all enjoyed our entrees - however, I prefer the lobster rolls at Pearl Oyster Bar. Still, I wouldn't hesitate to go back. An extra thumbs up for the sizable drinks and the piano player!
Pros: Great Oyster Selection, Big Drinks
Cons: So-So Service

I went on the recommendation of a friend ans was terribly disappointed. We ordered the special, which sounded amazing and highly recommended- salmon fillet with potato pancake and some kind of sauce - and mussels and fries. The potato pancake was burnt to a crisp and the salmon was actually raw. It was like eating sashimi. My friend had gotten through most of it before I noticed and mentioned it to him. He refused to send it back but I told the waiter anyway. We were offered a free dessert, which neither of us wanted. My mussels were pretty bland. We ended getting the french fries comped and a free cup of coffee. I doubt that I will go back.
Pros: Conveninetly located
Cons: Food
