What People Are Saying About Ostia

The Scene – "Hostia" means host in Spanish, and though Ostia dropped the "h" for its name (for ease of pronunciation), there's no shortage of hospitality on display. The owner floats around the small, triangular space, tending to the needs of the neighborhood folks and walk-ins. An understated vibe comes through in a shiny tin wall and a chalkboard drawing of Spain pinpointing the origins of the available wines. – – The Food – It may not boast the flashiest decor, but Ostia's got spark where it counts: in the kitchen. Cut from a side table, 15-year-aged Serrano ham…

Tapas done right

by WVillageIdiot

Ostia is quality. So many of the pseudo-Tapas restaurants that have opened in NYC use the term Tapas to mean mis-matched, low quality appetizers- not true of this exceptional Village spot. The food my friends and I received at Ostia the other night was superb. The authentic Sangria (to me that means it has a great balance of fruit, wine and kick) was delicious and the Tapas were excellent. Now, I have had Croquettas in Spain, PR and Miami but Ostia's really were superb. Each of the dozen or so Tapas we ordered was better than the previous. The portions were fair and the food came out fast...I would comment on dessert, but who had room!

I can't wait to go back in the nice weather to sit on 7th Avenue with a pitcher of Sangria.

  • Pros: Great tasting tapas. Good menu. Great prices.
  • Cons: Probably need to tell server the order and pace you want your Tapas served.

Fine Spanish Food

by killblondes

I went to Ostia with my mother and two brothers. For apps. we got the pork, shrimp and calamari. For main courses we got the duck, paella, filet mignon and lamb chops. We also had two bottles of Aroa wine. Everything was excellent. They also gave us two bottles of wine for free. The server did not really know the menu. And the second bottle of wine, she actually ruined it by breaking pieces of cork into the bottle (very awkward) but the excellent food and free bottles of wine made up for it.

  • Pros: Food, wine, manager
  • Cons: small portions, server

The Details on Ostia

What to Drink:

Sangria is tasty, if a little too sweet. A $36 dollar bottle of Borsao, a medium-bodied Spanish red, better brings out the food's complex flavors.

Where to Sit:

The seats by the front windows get a little chilly in winter, so opt for the back tables.

Outdoor Seating:

When the weather warms up, sidewalk seating is available.
