What People Are Saying About Jimmy's 43

Featured Review

One can almost imagine monks settling down for a goblet of cask ale at this subterranean East Village pub, although a well-dressed, relaxed crowd of locals is what you'll find nowadays. Dim lights embrace antlers and decorative wooden casks in a warm glow as patrons sip from an impressive array of local, German and Belgian brews, or dine from an organic market-driven menu full of dishes like steamed mussels, shrimp and grits, and lamb chorizo. Whether you consider it a bar with amazing food or a restaurant with amazing beer, you'll likely leave this cozy spot satisfied.

Editor's Tips

The Extras:
The side room, called the Small Stage at Jimmys, serves as a space for theater, music shows and private parties (35-40 people).
What to Drink:
If you can handle strong brews, try the 1994 Rogue Old Crustaceon ($14) from the vintage list. The Six Point Smoke Porter ($7) offers a Brooklyn-brewed alternative to Guinness, and Chimay Triple is as refreshing as ever.
The Extras:
Call to book a private event in Jimmy's sizeable back room.
Know Before You Go:
A 20 percent gratuity is charged for parties of six or more.
What to Drink:
You can't go wrong with whatever cask ale they have on tap; cask ales are usually richer in flavor than normal draught beers and go down smoother as well.

Underground cute Craft Beer Spot

by Athena Chang , Citysearch Contributor

Jimmy's No 43 looks so shabby outside that I never walked in since I moved to East Village 4 years ago. Due to a coupon offering, I found out on Yelp that it has excellent reviews and I finally paid my first visit last night.

Truth to be told, I was quite impressed with the beer menu and quality of food. they have a good selection of craft beer and some of them appear to be seasonal. Also, their food is locally sourced so they are fresh and mostly organic I believe.

My boyfriend tried their local oyster, which comes in 1 plate of 3 for $5. We ordered the Piggery farm sausage and the Shrimp gritte for dinner. The flavor is just amazing. Each dish looks quite simple but the flavor is rich and explosive.

the only negative thing is it is VERY hot in there. I don't know if their AC broke or something but the fans are not strong enough for sure so be aware.

A favorite neighborhood treat

by CatPeculiar

I've been so happy to have this place in the 'hood ever since it opened. Jimmy's is a real community place - with a great atmosphere and a staff that recognizes you and treats you right. And, this is about the only place where I eat a nice dinner with a BEER, not wine (not that Jimmy doesn't have good wine, too, but the beer is so top notch!). Just love it, and love Jimmy himself, too!

  • Pros: Amazing craft beer, food that's always a suprise & a treat
  • Cons: Weekend crowds can keep me from my Jimmy's!

Best place for a classy beer

by alwaystwirling

Try the risotto! I am a vegetarian and the menu does not offer me a wide selection, but the selection it does offer is pretty great.

And the beers are always great. Even better are Jimmy's frequents tastings and events which always make a great evening out.

  • Pros: Huge moderately priced selection of beers on tap/bottle

Best place for unusual beers!

by Peter B

Jimmy's may be off the beaten path a little but that just adds to its uniqueness. Great beer selection and tasty appetizer foods paired well with beer. Sausage, cheese, and toasted nuts were excellent! We have taken others there over the past two years and will continue to visit when in the City.

Pete and Donna from Haverhill, MA

  • Pros: Many unusual beers to choose from
  • Cons: off the beaten path a little
