What People Are Saying About Ed's Lobster Bar

The Scene
The long narrow space fills up quickly with neighborhood seafood-seekers and followers of chef Ed McFarland, formerly of Pearl Oyster. The look is seaside-chic, with slate-colored walls, a white marble bar and a few more casual gestures like chalkboard menus. Bar seats are packed so tightly, you'll feel like you're actually on a ship.
The Food
The menu meshes boardwalk and upscale eatery preparations. The hefty lobster roll nearly justifies the dish's overexposed profile: The meat's sweet flavor registers through mayo and chive, and the bun's heavy buttering adds a homey heartiness. Less successful is the broiled lobster, its meat slightly stringy. Montauk bluefish gets a richly satisfying accompaniment of bacon-dotted cabbage, while crispy fried clams, bellies intact, bring to mind New England beach towns--even if their hefty sticker price doesn't. Strawberry rhubarb pie is fresh and tart enough to overcome a half-melted slab of Il Laboratorio gelato.

as a long time NY-er (who has moved out of town) this is one of my favorite restaurants. I have been craving a lobster roll and when I visit next week I am definitely going to visit Ed's. Great atmosphere (even if it is a bit cramped). Never had a bad meal here. Worth every penny. Great wine recommendations. Love the marble bar and wainscotting.

We used to love it, but Ed's lobster has really deteriorated: prices have gone up and the quality of the food has gone down. There's not much to recommend it any more -- eating there is not a pleasant experience. The prices on the web menu need updating -- they don't reflect what the restaurant now charges. Value for $$$ is poor.

What to Drink:
If the $6 glass of Muscadet doesn't whet your whistle, skip the rest of the overpriced wine list and head straight to the beer--a $6 pint of Harpoon IPA goes better with lobster anyway.
Where to Sit:
If you can get there early enough, there are a handful of tables in a small back area, which provides a little more elbow room than the bar.
Look Good:
Though it's not advertised, the restaurant will sometimes take reservations for parties larger than six.
Lunch Spot:
The lunch menu replaces the whole lobster dishes with items like clam and oyster rolls.
Know Before You Go:
Prices vary, especially for lobster, based on market availability.
