Editorial Review for Ed's Lobster Bar – by Justin Hartung

The Scene
The long narrow space fills up quickly with neighborhood seafood-seekers and followers of chef Ed McFarland, formerly of Pearl Oyster. The look is seaside-chic, with slate-colored walls, a white marble bar and a few more casual gestures like chalkboard menus. Bar seats are packed so tightly, you'll feel like you're actually on a ship.

The Food
The menu meshes boardwalk and upscale eatery preparations. The hefty lobster roll nearly justifies the dish's overexposed profile: The meat's sweet flavor registers through mayo and chive, and the bun's heavy buttering adds a homey heartiness. Less successful is the broiled lobster, its meat slightly stringy. Montauk bluefish gets a richly satisfying accompaniment of bacon-dotted cabbage, while crispy fried clams, bellies intact, bring to mind New England beach towns--even if their hefty sticker price doesn't. Strawberry rhubarb pie is fresh and tart enough to overcome a half-melted slab of Il Laboratorio gelato.

Insider Tips

What to Drink

If the $6 glass of Muscadet doesn't whet your whistle, skip the rest of the overpriced wine list and head straight to the beer--a $6 pint of Harpoon IPA goes better with lobster anyway.

Where to Sit

If you can get there early enough, there are a handful of tables in a small back area, which provides a little more elbow room than the bar.

Look Good

Though it's not advertised, the restaurant will sometimes take reservations for parties larger than six.

Lunch Spot

The lunch menu replaces the whole lobster dishes with items like clam and oyster rolls.

Know Before You Go

Prices vary, especially for lobster, based on market availability.

Found out about this place through a friend. Just went there for the first time last week, when the weather was at about 100 degrees. The service is EXCELLENT, very attentive and great with suggestions. The half lobster was the ideal thing to order to cool me down. The wine list is small, but they have what you need. The freshly hand-pounded lemonade is the best I've ever tasted. It was so good, I brought my parents back there with me the same night. The decor is simple and clean, and the raw sampler platter will give you everything you need to stay cool in the summer. MUST GO!

Pros: service, food, the bar seating

Cons: tiny space, waiting for a seat

I've been to this place a few times and always left happy. The last time though, on one of those chilly windy spring days, my lunch experience was less than enjoyable. The entrance door was kept open leaving all the chilly air come in. The manager refused to close it, without giving any reason. When I pointed out that all customers were wearing their coats and several other customers complained about the cold, including a mother with her toddler, the manager's response was "that's how it is, I can't close the door". Now, what kind of a dumb attitude is that? I told him it was the last time I came here. We still stayed for our lunch because we were craving lobster so badly, but when our food arrived, even the nice waiter was cold, serving the plates with his hands turned blue! The food is still good but I won't go back there because of the attitude.

Pros: Excellent food

Cons: Slow service depending on how busy, manager's arrogant attitude.
