Editorial Review for Resto – by Kathleen Squires
The Scene
Thirsty? Starting with the marble-topped bar and its vast beer collection, the space drops subliminal clues that may spur cravings for a cold one. A pressed tin ceiling, oaky tables and floors, and textured walls conjure a comfy keg cellar, while lighting fixtures resemble frosty, overturned goblets. Tippling certainly buys patience for the awkward service.
The Food
Each dish on the comfort-driven Belgian menu would go down great with a brew--especially the fat, crispy frites. Though they accompany mussels, steak, burgers and stews, they're good enough to order on their own with dipping sauces like lime pickle and a mustardy gribiche. Bitterballen, lightly fried veal and pork meatballs touched with gruyere cheese, also make a great sidekick to suds, while grog adds a glazy richness to carbonnade (beef chuck stew). Besides a parfait with campari gelee, desserts break the boozy pattern. The chocolate selection leaves only the sweetest of hangovers.

Had such high hopes for this place and we were so horribly disappointed. Got the deviled eggs to start-wow-super salty! Its sitting on a crispy fried thing. I think it was a slab-o salt. Then got the meatballs- same batter as the fried things-with a hint of meat-so salty fried dough things with meat-flavor. OK...$15 for a dry burger-which they don't take temp on, and when we asked for mayo-because it was dry- we were charged a $1 extra-it's just cheap, petty and ridiculous. I realize the fries are hand cut-but if they just fried them crispy, it would have been better than the soggy mess we got. When the waitress came back to drop the check (btw-the only 2 times we saw her was to take the order and drop the check) and she said how was it, and we responded that it wasn't great-she just said "oh" she would have noticed when we didn't finish our food-had she bothered to check. So horrible-tasteless-salty-icky meal-BLECK
Pros: we will never go there again
Cons: everything

I'm still not sure why this place gets a 4.5 star (and friends still keep recommending it). Both times, we actually sent food back. The steak recipe is "re-thought" but not in a good way. The Cod was gamey and undercooked. We also had the mussels but the fries (again, re-thought in a bad way) were thick and undercooked, actually cold in the center. On top of it, the acoustics are terrible so its very loud and the staff is pushy (turn and burn) to get you out the door. Its a limited menu and trying to be original, but it doesn't work. We hear great things about the grilled cheese on the lunch menu, so maybe that's where the 4.5 comes from. Save your $250 and go somewhere great.
Pros: Decent wine list
Cons: Loud, bad food, pushy staff, bad menu options
