Editorial Review for Red Hook Ballfields – by Justin Hartung

In Short
On weekends in summer, the Red Hook ball fields come to life with nail-biting soccer games. But for foodies across the city, the real thrill comes from the accompanying food stands--a veritable promised land of dishes from all over Central and South America and the Caribbean. Lined up along two sides of the field, the rows of tents churn out heaping portions of recipes from Ecuador (ceviche), Mexico (huaraches, tacos and tamales), El Salvador (papusas) and the Dominican Republic (barbecued beef with plantains), to name just a few.

Insider Tips

When to Go

Though hours are flexible, 12pm to 5pm is considered the prime time for food.

Where to Sit

Sun lovers can throw down a blanket just about anywhere around the game, while shade seekers will need get there early enough to grab one of the few picnic tables under trees.

What to Drink

Beer hasn't been allowed in the park for years, so fruity agua fresca and creamy horchata quench this crowd's thirst.

Know Before You Go

Many of the tents don't post prices, and some of the vendors don't speak English. If you don't know Spanish, be prepared to simply point at what looks tasty (accompanied by a "gracias," of course).

I went with a good friend from Mexico who had been craving authentic Mexican food. So we went and she had a bite and I asked her "How was it?" and she then said it tastes like her aunts' cooking. And we then proceeded to make yummy noises for quite some time. We got tacos, corn, mango with hot sauce. Next weekend, I'm getting a papusa. You really need to go before it's too late! And you should support them - this is a New York gem that is in danger of leaving. Do write letters to help them stay!

Pros: taste, price, vibe

Cons: city policies

Great atmosphere with superb latin food (mexican, domincan, puerto rican, honduras etc). These are hard working immigrant that has come to Red Hook to share some of their home cooking. Just follow the crowd, great smelliing food and those playing soccer is where they will be. Try to come early, before the line gets long and they run out of food. The staff are very courteous to the public. Spice can be altered to your needs - beware it can get really spicy. Excellent food with a touch of love.

Pros: Excellent food and atmosphere of latin culture

Cons: Parking and no tables to eat
