  14. The place was small, crowded and loud in the good sense though - the atmosphere you expect for drinking good wine and eating good food in the presence of good friends!
  15. The atmosphere is warm, tiny, and convivial without ever overwhelming the small space or feeling cramped.
  16. The owner-chef Didier made us feel as if we were his personal guests (there were several other parties eating here, also), the service was excellent, and we loved the ambience.

  1. We were too full to eat all of our fresh strawberries and cream, sadly.
  2. " later in the evening, what was truly memorable was when they brought out dessert, the music was turned down and didier and co. surprised me with a rendition of "happy birthday" and candles on the profiteroles!
  3. Every dish, including dessert, has not disappointed.
  4. Not every dish was so great (it was not a good sign when Chef Didier, as gregarious as his reputation suggests, got up in our grill to defend some of his least popular specialties, like the seafood shepherd's pie or the clafoutis for dessert), We tried th
  5. chose the pie, which was divine (even when reheated) and the boy ate the hanger steak which came topped with fried garlic.
  6. There are a lot of seafood items on the menu but i had the lamb and it was excellent , my friend had the seafood sheperds pie which was definitely the winner and i am not a big fan of seafood.
  7. from appetizer (soupe l'oignon, escargots, fresh sliced tomato special) to main course (poached skate, hanger steak, roasted lamb leg) to dessert (creme brulee, bittersweet profiteroles), the food was excellent, everything prepared to perfection.
  8. had the escargot, searched skate; he had the mussels in curry sauce, filet mignon with blue cheese sauce (a daily specials) and we shared the chocolate lava cake - everything was delicious, Serving size was perfect as I was beyond satisfied but could or
  9. the waitress was helpful with the menu and thankfully we listened to her suggestions and ordered the hangar steak and seafood shepherds pie.
  10. Three large mounds of goodness (or "shoes" as Dider called them; they do look like baby shoes), and the chocolate sauce, slightly bitter in the way excellent, quality chocolate should be, caused us to drink the sauce directly from the spoon again.
  11. The place is small so when my dessert came out, the entire restaurant sang happy birthday loudly and happily as if they were there to celebrate with me too!
  12. everything is rich in flavor - from the appetizer to the dessert.
  13. After our meal -and after chatting with Didier about his restaurants in Paris - and after topping off our mear with a terrific chocolate mousse - it was time to go (but we'll be back) Try this small gem - and enjoy this fascinating Soho area.
  14. My friend ordered the dessert for us and out came the most interesting dessert I've seen in a long time.
  15. Our starters of calamari and beet salad were simple and light, and the mussels, particularly the curry one, came in the most delicious cream-based sauces.
  16. It was the best chocolate lava cake I've ever had.
  17. The chocolate ooze was of such good quality, truly rich bittersweet chocolate.
  18. There is a tid bit -- perhaps I am a big dessert critic -- the chocolate mousse cake was a bit too floury.

  2. We arrived with our bottle of wine and were delighted to see several empty tables and the great smell of garlic and butter.
  3. Luckily my friends and I brought some good wine to go along with the delicious meal!
  4. came across La Sirene a few weeks back as I walked my dog on Broome St. I am a big fan of B.Y.O restaurants in the city b/c of the huge mark up in wine that restaurants tack on.

  6. The place was small, crowded and loud in the good sense though - the atmosphere you expect for drinking good wine and eating good food in the presence of good friends!
  7. Didier is the consummate host, with his suggestions on what mussels will go with your wine, the best way to sop up the juice and his entertaining stories-without being intrusive or overbearing.
  8. But we did enjoy the mussels in the classic white wine preparatoin, and wondered, what were the fragrant herbs beyond the obvious stalks of thyme?
  9. The hostess and waiter were both very inviting and attentive (e.g. when wine was low, it would be full again very soon and refilling our bread bowl).

  33. Didier, the proprietor/chef, is very attentive and charming but not overwhelming in an Artie Bucco sort of way.
  34. The food was delicious, the service was friendly and accommodating, and the overall atmosphere was cozy and relaxing (~16 seats).
  35. The food and service are wonderful.
  36. so i suppose the close quarters initiated a cozy and friendly environment with fellow patrons.
  37. The food was great, the service was charming and pleasant, while anticipating our needs and always available to discuss the menu.
  38. Rather than write Didier personally to thank him for the amazing experience at his restaurant, I decided to rave about it to everyone so that they may pay him and his lovely staff a visit.
  39. Amazing food, excellent service, a MUST GO-TO
  40. friendly service.
  41. would recommend this place to everyone - in fact i kinda want to keep it a secret and only tell a few people for fear that it might get too popular, which would make getting seats there more difficult!
  42. The hostess and waiter were both very inviting and attentive (e.g. when wine was low, it would be full again very soon and refilling our bread bowl).
  43. Literally everything on the menu sounded good, and looking at the people sitting next to me it all smelled and looked wonderful, and they seemed to really be enjoying it !
  44. Wonderful staff, wonderful chef, imaginative meals and a fantastic dining experience!
  45. have wanted to try this tiny bistro in my neighborhood for a long time after reading Bruni's review and seeing all the great write ups of the food, ambience, and staff here.
  46. Cute, friendly Restaurant
  47. the hangar steak with 4 incredible veggie sides and the duck liver salad, which was incredible and large enough to be an entree in its own right), the decor very cute and the service warm and friendly.
  48. The chef is very friendly and will answer any questions you might have about what is on his menu.
  49. The food is great, but it is the personal service of the owner/chef (Didier) that really makes the experience.
  50. So in a nutshell, food and service are outstanding.
  51. The service was great, even though there was just 1 lone waitress working the room.
  52. the menu was interesting and varied, service was cordial, the food was delicious and well-flavored, and the whole room was just.
  53. Overall, I was so, so impressed with the friendliness and warmth of the staff, the creativity of the chef and the delightful (though somewhat "cozy" atmosphere!
  54. would even recommend it to people I hate because everyone deserves to experience a meal that is this good.
  55. The chef and his wife were very attentive.
  56. The staff at La Sirene is the perfect complement to Didier's attentiveness, and the dining experience there would not be nearly as wonderful if not for Daphnee and her colleagues.
  57. The service is impeccable- the waitress charming and the water glasses always full.

  1. We also had the mussels (huge portion), beet salad (fresh and delicious), the Seafood au gratin (so many varieties in the dish), and the grilled shrimp (great spices and flavors).
  2. Three friends dining in a small restaurant made big by the warm atmosphere, kitchen near by and generous nature of the host and chef.
  3. came across La Sirene a few weeks back as I walked my dog on Broome St. I am a big fan of B.Y.O restaurants in the city b/c of the huge mark up in wine that restaurants tack on.
  4. The pasta was cooked al dente and the sauce was perfect and a generous portion of mixed seafood which is rare at most restaurants.
  5. friendly atmosphere, excellent food, reasonable prices, good service with no attitude, and an owner that can open a bottle of champagne with a teaspoon.
  6. Not overpriced, charming chef and waitress and delicious food, will absolutely be returning.
  7. also want to emphasize that La Sirene is a very affordable restaurant by NY standards.
  8. And the prices are very reasonable.
  9. Also the prices were totally reasonable.
  10. that's a huge statement, but it is 100% true.
  11. The chef honored another reservation over us even though we checked in 1/2 hr early, sat us down, and opened our expensive bottles of wine.
  12. I've never had such a bad experience in my life and I consider myself a huge foodie.
  13. The prices have been raised astronomically, and what was once a small, friendly, reasonably priced intimate bistro has become unfathomably expensive.
  14. I'm a huge foodie and this place is definitely not mediocre.
  15. They have paid attention to every detail here to ensure that you not only have the most delicious and affordable meal you will ever find in Manhattan, but that you also have that oh-so elusive all-around PERFECT dining experience.
  16. It was an incredible value and a transporting experience for a very special evening.
  17. AND--the prices were VERY reasonable, excellent, caring service and the portions were quite generous.
  18. The dish proportions were generous and the ingredients were very fresh.
  19. the portions are very abundant and the food is not light.
  20. This is a great advantage as you are not restricted by a wine list and can also save a good deal of money.
  21. Never been a huge fan of mussels, but since they offer 4 types on appetizer menu we figured it must be their specialty and had to try them.
  22. We brought some Prosecco with us (always been a huge fan of BYOB restaurants) and the chef came right over and opened our bottle with a flourish that inspired applause from the other diners.
wait time

  1. My friend ordered the dessert for us and out came the most interesting dessert I've seen in a long time.
  2. again; complete food hypnosis ensued and it took less than 10 minutes for us to inhale the scrumptious duck and pork.
  3. He called us less than 25 minutes later and gave us the red carpet treatment -- the food is AMAZING, the service is INCREDIBLE.
  4. imagine that it won't be long before La Sirene outgrows the currently small restaurant because of overwhelming demand for its heavenly dishes.
  5. Will be recommending La Sirene to others coming to NYC and hope to be there again before too long.
  6. have wanted to try this tiny bistro in my neighborhood for a long time after reading Bruni's review and seeing all the great write ups of the food, ambience, and staff here.
  7. Focusing on the South of France, the seafood heavy menu offers up some of the best mussels I've eaten in a long time.
  8. Upon leaving, we agreed that it was the best meal we'd had since visiting Paris over a year ago and I HIGHLY reccommend people make a reservation before it becomes popular enough (which I'm sure it will) to warrant a month-long wait for a table.

A MUST if you're in the city! :)

by yukestr13 at Citysearch

Very fine cuisine :) I brought my father who was in the city for business here, and though he's a picky eater, he absolutely raved about every dish! I HIGHLY recommend the escargot appetizer... the olive oil sauce it's in was incredible (the bread is there for a reason!). We ordered the Fillet Mignon and Halibut, and both were exquisite (not to mention the complimentary vegetable puree). French cuisine is all about the sauce, and they did a wonderful job. I loved every second of my time here... no question that I am coming back!

Make sure you have a reservation... but, around this time of year, coming in around 5pm on a Saturday w/o a reservation is no problem.

  • Pros: authentic french food, excellent service, BYOB

best meal i've had in nyc

by jules28 at Citysearch

I went to la sirene on a monday night (mon+tues, the chef is there). i've heard so many good things about the goat cheese tart and the escargot, that i decided to try it. i normally am not a big fan of cheese or tarts, and i've never had escargot in the past...but hands down...these 2 were absolutely amazing, and quite frankly - the best thing i've ever eaten in my life in NYC. that's a huge statement, but it is 100% true. the escargot was soft, in a olive oil/pesto-esque sauce that i could not just waste - i had to dip the bread in it and it was just finger licking good. the goat cheese tart was the BEST of the best - i can order 2 of those and have them all by myself. we also ordered the lamb in a wine/cream reduction (delicious) and a special with beans/bacon/duck (great, but not exceptional). the 4 veggie sides that come with the entrees are really good as well - the sweet potato mash, pineapple, and 2 other veggies that i don't know the name of but was really tasty. we shared the profitoles for dessert. it was perfect - the vanilla ice cream was really cold and not too hard, not too soft...the chocolate covering them was the real thing - bittersweet quality chocolate. i would recommend this place to everyone - in fact i kinda want to keep it a secret and only tell a few people for fear that it might get too popular, which would make getting seats there more difficult! when i go back, i think i need to have the goat cheese tart and escargot at every visit, and maybe try new entrees - at this point, i think whatever they serve will be absolutely delicious. even when you enter the restaurant - you don't know what they are cooking, but it smells amazing in there. the chef and waitress was so nice and charming. it was really one of the best (if not the best) dining experience i've ever had in NYC.

  • Pros: hospitable, charming chef/waitress, delicious food, BYOB

amazing food and exceptional service

by nycgal01 at Citysearch

I went to La Sirene on a Tuesday night this past week and for the second time in a row, had an amazing time. The food was absolutely exceptional -- better quality than places I've been to in the city 3 times the price. The service is unparalleled. So here's the story .. it was my friend's bday and I made a reservation sort of last minute -- on the night before. They said that they only have 2 seating times -- 7:00 and 9:30. I told them that I needed to make the reservation at 8 and they agreed saying it would probably work because no one had reserved yet for the 9:30 reservation.

Tuesday comes along and I get stuck at work. I call to tell them I'll be late and see if I can just change to the 9:30 time, and they say that they accidentally wrote my reservation down for Wed instead of Tue and that a group had reserved the whole restaurant for the 9:30 reseservation on Tue. Typically, in NYC, at this point you would be screwed, and argument may take place, and the restaurant wouldnt care. This was the opposite. They put the the chef on the phone and he apologized to me and said we could come back tomorrow and eat entirely for free. But I explained it was for a bday, and he offered to do his best to accomodate me and rush us as little as possible, and give us 50% off our meal... I had no other options so i went with plan B.

When we got there, despite my being late for an 8oclock reservation, they accomodated us and told us they talked to the group and we wouldnt have to move. They were so kind to us and kept apologizing for everything and even sent out extra dishes (all of which were amazing). Then when the group came, they apologized for the noise (which was minimal) and even sent us over a bottle of champagne. Then, on top of everything, they gave us half off on one of the best meals i've had in NYC even after they didn't rush us...

Overall, this place is fantastic and I highly recommend it. 5 star food. 5 star service.

When I got there (which was after 8).

fun night out

by ellievet at Citysearch

had a great meal but more than that, a great night at la sirene. m. didier is a pleasure, in the old-school european way. he watches over the dining room the way an owner-chef, not a celebrity guy, should. the menu was interesting and varied, service was cordial, the food was delicious and well-flavored, and the whole room was just...right. after dinner we had a dissertation from m. didier on quatre epices, on skate preparation, on butter in carrots. gosh, he knows his stuff, and we left happy and full. the portions are very abundant and the food is not light. we probably overordered. but where in the world can a non meat eater get shepherd's pie de mer? i mean, really. i was so happy and full going home that five degrees out didn't trouble me. plus i was radiating enough heat from all those calories. next up: i get the curry mussels.

Wonderful French Bistro

by sjceder at Citysearch

This restaurant came highly recommended from our son and his partner, Vincent, who hosted us for a weekend in NYC. We thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere and the coziness of La Sirene. We shared the Goat Cheese Tart and the Calamari appetizers among 4 people and found that our palates were being teased as to what was to come.

I, personally enjoyed the Shrimp entree as I was not expecting the subtle spiciness of the dish and was pleasantly surprised. Othres in our party enjoyed the Beef Filet Mignon with Gargonzola, the Pork filet, and Cassoulet. I tasted each of the dishes and enjoyed the rich flavors each presented.

Living in North Carolina, we do not find such hidden treasures as we found in La Siren. Thank you for a wonderful evening
