Editorial Review for Perilla – by Kathleen Squires
The Scene
"Top Chef" fans hoping for a glimpse of the show's first victor crowd the small modest dining room, trimmed in orange, beige and brown. Circular tangerine banquettes with shaded lamps are favorite nooks for groups, while intimacy-seeking diners fancy the polished zebrawood tables in back. Non-starstruck neighborhood folks mill about the walnut bar.
The Food
Chef Harold Dieterle proves he's no flash in the pan through exquisite, versatile cooking. Soft, spicy duck meatballs, topped with a quail egg, show he knows comfort; pristine raw hamachi in a cucumber, cilantro, yuzu and tomato water displays smart balance; and fiddlehead fern ravioli dotted with fava beans and morels demonstrates dedication to seasonality. Side dishes are just as carefully crafted, especially a creamy faro risotto. Desserts, like a bland ricotta cheesecake, don't compare, but the overall strength of the menu will ensure this spot survives long after Dieterle's 15 minutes of reality-show fame are up.

The duck meatballs are AMAZING, as advertised. The artichoke and fava bean salad was very good, as was the banana tart. Nice vodka selection, and a good wine list at reasonable prices. Service is excellent, but you'll have trouble hearing your server and vice versa. My date and I are into Interpol too, but the music is too damned loud for the space. The biggest disappointment is the entrees. The entrees are awful and unimaginative. The roast duck was undercooked and tough. My friend had the grouper which was old, and subsequently, very fishy. She sent it back, only to get a hanger steak that was smothered in a sauce that overpowered the beef. I'm a fan of Harold's, but don't know if I'll be back.....maybe for a meatball snack.
Pros: Duck meatballs, wine and dessert
Cons: Entrees and NOISE

I love this place. I know I am biased since I literally am on the same block. I walked in on a sunday at around noon and it was filled perfectly, not empty but not packed, so I don't think you need a reservation for brunch. The menu is small but adequate and everything is delicious, including the selection of wines by the glass. I would definitely recommend as a place to have an intimate brunch.
Pros: Great duck burger.
Cons: Could be on the pricey side with a few glasses of wine.
