“Awesome restaurant, fun, loud, great desserts”
“The cod was delicious, the beef carpaccio was outstanding the strawberry dessert was fresh and light and wonderfully sweet - all around excellent food - well thought out and interesting, but not fussy.”
“chose a tawny port from the dessert wine list (lovely choices there--and all reasonable prices) to go with it and that was the perfect ending to a super meal.”
“The artichoke and fava bean salad was very good, as was the banana tart.”
“The menu is small but adequate and everything is delicious, including the selection of wines by the glass.”
“In all, a nice experience at a good restaurant with room for improvement.”
“Overall, the meal was delicious and I would return in a heartbeat.”
“Elegant Restaurant, comfortable staff, neighborhood spot”
“chose a tawny port from the dessert wine list (lovely choices there--and all reasonable prices) to go with it and that was the perfect ending to a super meal.”
“The pork tenderloin entree was the best combination of flavors, food and presentation I've had in a long time.”
Former Top Chef winner Harold Dieterle gets more buzz for The Marrow and Kin Shop, but this American classic, straighforwardly brilliant, is his best restaurant -- and one of the best in the city.
Not worth the money.
I went to Perilla with my girlfriend. We made a reservation because we wanted to go try something special.
I'll give you the quick sum up first, then you can read the rest if you feel like it........
Big disappointment. If you have 100 bucks to spend on a date, i highly recommend you go to Budakan, or David Burke Townhouse. Both those places are pricey but at least you come away feeling like you paid for something special.
Now on to the experience......
The duck meat ball appetizer was nice.
I ordered the duck breast and she ordered the salmon.
Both our dishes came to us practically raw. The fish was luke-warm to the touch. My duck was red in the middle, even though i asked for "medium". Neither of us were even moderately impressed with our dishes and we both left the plates 60% uneaten. It was actually unappetizing.
Aside from the main part of the dish, there wasn't really anything that came with it. The duck just had some spinach and some peanuts. Not flavorful. Not really impressive. I could have easily made this myself.
The fish came with just some sauce that wasn't amazing by any standards.
We ordered the risotto as a side. It was ok, but nothing to write home about. Kind of inconsistent texture. Once again, not impressive.
So , one appetizer, 2 entrees, a one alcoholic drink..... $100. Um...... Yeah, no way that was worth it. We both left that place hungry and i personally wanted to stop at a deli for a sandwich afterwards.
I think the other people giving this place high reviews are just part of the pretentious foody crowd or they just don't want to feel stupid for saying "i don't get it, this food isn't that good"....... well i'm not worried about being that guy. I don't get it, and the food wasn't good and i would never think to myself, "wow, i'm really craving _____ from Perilla"
Perilla on Behind the Burner. I absolutely love the sorbet cake at Perilla, and it's affordable too. I read about them on Behind the Burner. com they have a great segment on Perilla, just search the name in the searchbar on the site
Great recommendation, great food!.
My old boss was in town and wanted to catch up for dinner, after flying in the day previous, somewhere more relaxed was preferred. A colleague recommend Perilla. I read some of the reviews on this site and was a little worried about the noise comments - my colleague disagreed so I thought what the hell and booked a table for 2!
This was a great recommendation. Our waitress was very attentive. We orderd the sashimi and the boar belly to start, my old boss was given the calamari by mistake but after tasting it realised this wasnt such a bad thing!! We did advise our waitress and she told us to enjoy the calamari and she'll have a boar belly dish put together asap! Three starters for two was a bit much, but when food tastes good you can't waste it!!
We shared the steak for 2 for our main course, this came with garlic mashed potatoe and spinach, i wasnt so keen on the way the spinach was done but my old boss thought it was great!
We were far to full for desserts but was very satisfied with the meal we had.
I would definitely go again and would recommend this restaurant. The noise wasn't loud, although the music was a little 'pop' for this beautiful place.
What's this? I forgot what we ordered. Who cares-It's amazin. The food is fantastic!!! My only regret about this place is that it will become too popular and harder to get a table, or that the chef will take off soon. But they already have a very good pace for seating/reservation staggering, so as long as the chef sticks around, this will be my new favorite place in the W Village for a while. Love the decor. My cocktail was also wonderful. Again, not into sweets, and the Perilla 75 has JUST the right mix of sweet, sour and zing. Wasn't crazy about the dessert we shared (peanut butter something or other), but I'm not a big dessert person. It could be bigger, but then it might lose some of its uniqueness.
Fantastic New American. I don't usually take time to review but Perilla was so good that I will. 9:45 res for two. Seated right away. Space bet tables was tight, but not more so than many Manhattan places. Noise loud, but place was packed, and noise probably a function of place size (small, but not tiny as described in some reviews). Shared app: roasted maine sardines w/ black hummus, piquillo peppers & oregano vinaigrette. Entrees: dorado (special) w/ chickpeas & water chestnuts; roasted local game hen w/ orzo, summer vegetables, pea greens & poultry jus. Desserts: rhubarb sorbet cake w/ creme fraiche parfait & peanut butter chantilly; vanilla scented doughnuts w/ key lime custard & coconut refresher. Donuts highly recommended. Service impeccable, food delicious.
Really nice dining experience. Wife and I went to Perilla for our anniversary. Warmly lit dining room that wasn't too bright provided a really romantic atmosphere. The food was really something special. Duck meatballs, crispy pork belly, branzino and lamb, and vanilla scented doughnuts were all wonderful. A very indulgent meal that left us feeling very satisfied. Friendly and knowledgeable staff made it all the more enjoyable. Great place for a special occasion. Well worth the price. Can't wait to go back and try brunch.
Fantastic Food & Great Service. The perfect combination of great food and good service in a nice intimate restaurant atmosphere. Came here with a large group of New Yorkers, and visiting Australians & New Zealanders and every single person was satisfied. Impressive! Go Harold!
Exquisite food. We had Summer Truffle & Sheep's Milk Ricotta Ravioli, Scallops, Pork Belly and doughnuts. Everything was delicious. The ravioli was extremely yummy and light, scallops were beautifully seasoned with a perfect crispiness on the outside, the same delicious crispiness in the pork belly dish. We have eaten in the most fabulous restaurants and this one is up there with the best. The service is excellent our waiter was attentive but not intrusive. Highly recommend this restaurant; we plan on coming back for more.
Great restaurant!. Perfect combination of great food, very good service and relaxed atmoshere! I live in the neighborhood and i am so surprised by the quality of food and service at perilla!
Great brunch. I've been here twice for brunch and the place has been great both times. The omelets are a perfect texture. Make sure to order sides--the main course comes unaccompanied. The fruit is especially fresh and diverse and the toast is fancier than you'll find for most brunches. Nice, attentive service too.
