Go for a splitting headache, not a dinner! – My husband and I have been to this restaurant several times as we live in the neighborhood and eat out often. Last night we had a client in town who expressed an interest in fresh, simple food on the healthy side, so we took her to Nelson Blue.
The music was so loud that we had no idea what the server was saying, much less what we were saying to each other. While the music has always been loud here, last nights' was incredibly overboard. There was only 1 waitress for the entire place and she was clearly overwhelmed and unhappy. We asked her, and later the bartender to please turn down the music a little, neither fulfilled the request. Ultimately, we ended up leaving due to the deafening volume, as did the table next to us.
While the food is nice and simple, it is not worth the splitting headache from the music. This is really more of a frat house environment than most in this neighborhood are interested in supporting.
Excellent food but noisy – We wanted to try this place as we visited New Zealand recently and loved the country. We had a group of three without a reservation (they don't take them). We were lucky to get a table as they have very few. It's basically a bar with a kitchen. The kitchen does a great job, though. The lamb chops were superb and a generous portion (5). My wife had the venison and it was excellent as well. The third person had the scallops; likewise, excellent. We washed it down with a great NZ sauvignon blanc. The hostesses were blonde and attractive as prior commentors have noted. The main problem is that it is a small place. The music was turned up and the people at the bar (very close to our table) had to shout to be heard which raised the noise level even more. A rather inebriated patron from the UK plopped down at our table and chatted us up for a few minutes as well. Overall, an active bar, loud, small and risky for food with no reservations, but the food was excellent and not expensive.
Nelson Blue - A Crossover Bar/Restaurant, With A Smoking Hot Staff – Nelson Blue is what I like to refer to as a crossover vehicle. Like an Infinity FX45, its sporty, fast, hot and sleek, yet comfortable, smooth and dependable. By day, it's a can't miss Wall Street lunch spot. After work, slick (albeit currently humbled and much quieter) Wall Streeters schmooz clients while local hipsters and sophisticates alike enjoy the best Kiwi Panty Removers (a must try!) this side of Nelson, New Zealand in a relaxed, feel good ambience. NB morphs ever so subtly into a happening dinner destination from 7-10pm offering delish apps and entres, and then again into a club-esq scene (sans the attitude) on Thursday-Saturday nights. But wait, that's not all. Late night it becomes a saving grace, oasis in the desert type after hours spot (when you just want a good, stiff drink from a friendly staff at 2 a.m. on a Thursday). You name it, NB's got something for everyone.
At times, NB reminds me a bit of that old man's bar we all loved from back in the day, but with delicious kiwi delights, great music, lighting, replete draft selection, great wine choices and a array of Belgian imports (always served in their proper glass).
And, yes, Nelson Blue is not remotely lacking in its bevy of smoking hot bartenders and waitresses (well, the female ones anyway). The previous poster got it partially right. Vanessa (one of the owners) is as hot as they come. Black hair, smoldering almond eyes and a face that will melt you. But she has some stiff competition from her 2 co-owners, Michelle and Diane. Michelle is a striking, slender, brunette who doubles as a bartender and possibly a model. Diane is a tall, stunning blonde with eyes that are blue like windex! These have to be the 3 hottest owners anywhere in NYC. Jamie behind the bar will have you on your knees begging for more...drinks, of course. And Emily & Kelly, 2 of NB's premier waitresses, well, I only have 68 characters left.... You'll just have to come in and see for yourself!!!
Vanessa is a fox!! – I had some friends invite me to nelson blue a couple weeks ago. I didn't know why they wanted me to go all the way down to the sea port but after i got there i got the picture! Hotties hotties hotties everywhere! Everyone that works there is smokin! The owner vanessa had the best smile and laugh and made our group really feel at home! Of course i wouldn't want to say anything to her face but in a sort of missed connections way i have a crush on you vanessa! xo
Great downtown lunch spot. Friendly, comfortable, handsome restaurant, different menu. – Have only been for lunch so no comment on those reviewers who have had different experiences at different meals, (I suppose a nightime werewolf like transformation is possible), but lunch is much better than average. Given the relative paucity of nice restaurants downtown (aside for touristy, or conventional italian or sushi) this should be in everyone's client repetoire. Nice fish dishes and welcome NZ flavor to the pies and lamb chops.
Service was attentive and friendly.
A Favorite – Awesome food and friendly staff make this one of our favorite spots to eat and spend the evening! We've been here many times, and we've NEVER been disappointed.
Great find – I stumble upon this place while I was visiting the seaport. Great wine selection and tasty food. I was in the mood to try something new and was very pleased with the choices. I am very happy to find NB and will definitely go again next time I am in the area.
average pub, nice staff – I have been to NB a number of times and don't see the hype reviews to be totally truthful. The food is average, to me, the wine list nothing special. The service to be far too slow. The waitresses seem to socialize with a particular table and forget about the rest.
Have come in with coworkers after work and have enjoyed ourselves. Would come back, but not for the food. I didn't find the crab cakes to be sensational, but I am originally from Maryland.
A decent place, but nothing to write home about
Upset I have to leave even one star - – Horrified by mean owner - have heard tales of him starting fights with patrons and dogs alike. If you want a frat house, the place might work for you?
