What People Are Saying About Go Go Curry

The Scene – Long lines, handwritten posters and Japanese fast food--eating at this tiny Garment District restaurant is like going to a Japanese baseball game sans the baseball. Newspaper clippings featuring Yankee outfielder Hideki "Godzilla" Matsui are everywhere: "Go" means five in Japanese, and Matsui's number is 55. Seating consists of one long table and counter, which the crowd packs after waiting in a long line leading up to the fast food-style cashier. – – The Food – What brings in the stadium-sized crowds? That would be the curry, a thick, sweet, goopy delight…
Best Japanese curry in NYC
by PaterMax at Citysearch
This is a very small Japanese restaurant that serves very good Japanese curry. They have the best curry in the city. I usually go there on the 5th, 15th and 25th of the month because they give out free topping coupons on those dates. My favorite dish is the Grand Slam where it has a little bit of everything. The pork, chicken and shrimps are so crispy. This restaurant looks similar to a Chinese take out restaurant where you can eat there without paying tips. Those who love Japanese curry should give this restaurant a try. I am sure you will go back again and again.
- Pros: Good food.
Comfort food with a kick
by ravnwing at Citysearch
Anyone who's ever been to Japan has probably enjoyed the Japanese take on curry, which is a a slightly spicy variation on Japanese comfort food. Whenever I need my curry fix, I head right to GoGo where the curry is thick and rich, the portions are huge and the katsu is perfectly fried. The Grand Slam (which basically has everything on the menu pilled on a double-helping of rice) is more than enough for two and will leave everyone completely stuffed.
You do not come to this place for decor - aside from a few tables and a counter, the place is basically a shrine to Matsui and borders on kirsh. But the food is great, the staff quick and where else in NY are you going to get a platter of authentic Japanese curry for less than $10?
- Pros: Great fresh food, fast service
- Cons: If it's busy, expect a tight squeeze at the counter
Bring an appetite
by christopherbailey at Citysearch
Sure, it costs a little more than chain fast food or your neighborhood Chinese joint, but this Japanese comfort-food import is well worth trying.
You get rice (white only, I believe) slathered in curry (nothing like Indian or West Indian ... this is dark and think with only a little heat and probably a little too much salt) topped with pork, chicken, shrimp or sausage. The medium should handle most appetites.
- Pros: friendly, straight-forward menu
- Cons: making the best of bad decor
