The best gym I have ever been to. I have belonged to five different gyms in Manhattan, Brooklyn & Queens, including the higher-end Health and Racquet Club, and also NYSC, and I think Evolution is the best of all of them.

The atmosphere is great. It is diverse, men and women, old and young. It is not meat-markety or a pick-up scene. As a woman I am totally comfortable working out there. There are also some senior citizen members there, and I like that they are comfortable at Evolution, too.

Everyone who works there is really nice and helpful. Once they learn your name, they'll remember it and use it, which is a nice personal touch. I feel like I'm at home when I'm there. Totally happy and comfortable and no drama.

Also, I have worked out early mornings and after work, and I've never had a problem with overcrowding. Occasionally, all the ellipticals will be taken, but that is rare. It's not dog-eat-dog to get the machines.

As other reviewers have mentioned, it is also spotless. The staff is cleaning all the time... cleaning the classroom, the locker room, wiping down the machines, vacuuming, it's great.

The classes are also really awesome. Some of the instructors have cultish followings, and with good reason!

I have been a member of Evolution since July 2007, just after they opened, and dread the day when I leave Astoria and will have to go to some other inferior gym!

Great gym. Great gym! Great price! Love the vibe in the gym! I joined 8mths ago and was a little disappointed with the old GM, he always had an attitude! Now after they fired him, the gym has alot better vibe, best of luck! Btw! Love the new colors

Great Atmosphere! Clean and friendly, GREAT GYM!!!. I've loved this gym from the moment I walked in! The most important thing for me in a gym is feeling comfortable enough to work out there. I'll admit I was a bit sceptical at first because it is a more high-end looking gym but to my very pleasant surprise not only was it affordable but I felt comfortable and right at home from the start!

It is under new management now and the atmosphere is so much lighter and super-friendly! The staff is always helpful and smiling, the trainers are by far the best I've come across, and they have a great 24 hour cleaning staff so the machines are ALWAYS clean! (which is very important)! The bathroom is also very, very nice and has a steam room in it which is great to unwind in after a long workout. The place itself is very spacious and the machines are all placed in a way that doesn't make you feel crowded at all!

Overall:

Great classes, Great people, Great place!!!

I don't plan on leaving anytime soon, and I would deffinitely recommend this gym to everyone!

Under New Managment. This Gym was always Great but now with a NEW General Manager it is even Better. The staff is always smiling and ready to help you. This is a high end Gym at a Astoria Price , Just LOVE It.

ABSOLUTELY THE BEST GYM IN ASTORIA. I am a female member for 2 years and I must say that every day that I go there the staff, trainers, and especially the owner Anthony, makes me feel special and treats me with such respect. The members are truly nice and respectable towards everyone.

The machines are top notch and clean. Classes are AWESOME and the teachers are WONDERFUL. The gym itself is very clean, very spacious, no overcrowding, no sign up sheets for treadmills or any machines. The Bathrooms and the Locker Rooms are so clean you can eat off the floor. Lockers are spacious. I was actually shocked that people leave their UGG boots on top of the lockers and they are still there at the end of my workout. There is no fear that your stuff will be stolen. Secuirty is excellent at the gym.

The steam room is very clean and there is always a good supply of towels provided by the gym at the front desk. There is always a good amount of free weights so you never have to wait for the next person.

Evolution also has a good amount of stability balls, medicine balls, weighted bars, jump ropes, elastic bands that are of different strengths.

Evolution is a gym that is for both men and women and as a female member I have no problems working out with the guys at this gym. There is a fair balance of men and women members.

The staff and trainers always make sure that when you are using a machine you are doing the exercise properly, if they see you are not, they will come over to nicely correct you and show you the proper way. They do not want you to injure yourself or get hurt. This is a gym where you can feel free to ask any questions about the gym, equipment, or exercise and they will answer all your questions.

Plus when you first join the gym they will give you an hour session to show you how to use the machines properly and how to exercise on them.

I LOVE THIS GYM!! You cannot get a better membership at a gym for the price and the service they provide. Evolution is worth every penny of your membership. Plus you can pay monthly or yearly. Do not let negative reviews from City Search discourage you from stopping by and trying this gym, EVOLUTION IS THE BEST GYM IN ASTORIA and this is a gym that truly does everything to make you feel at home.

Great Health Club. One of the best health clubs I have ever been a member of. There clean and friendly and best of all open 24 hours which fits my schedule perfect. I highly recommend Evolution Sports Club.

good gym but crooks. My extremely low rating is based on the service I have received after leaving the gym. The gym is good - low-key, never crowded, good classes. BUT.... Shortly after paying a 12 month membership in full, I unexpectedly moved out of the area. To cancel membership, I followed their explicit instructions, including proving that I had moved more than 25 miles from the gym. It took FIVE MONTHS to finally get my refund, and that was only after I got my lawyer involved. Prior to that, I had made easily more than 10 phone calls to them to no avail. A lot of excuses were made as to the hold up. Like I said, it was finally resolved, but I think it took a lawyer for them to take action. So if you're on your own, good luck.

Hassel Free Membership. I first signed up for a month to month membership because I have had some bad experiences with other health clubs in New York. I liked Evolution so much after 3 months I just switched my membership to a yearly plan. No pressure when you walk through the door, always a smile from the staff and no personal trainers hounding your every move. I highly recommend Evolution Sports Club.

Good luck getting back money you are owed!. My experience with this gym and with Anthony M., the owner, should make everyone think twice about joining--or renewing their membership.

For more than 12 MONTHS, Anthony has been promising to pay me a refund of nearly $700. The first story was "I do refunds once a month; you'll have it within 60 days." That was a year ago.

Months later, the failure to send payment was "just an oversight." Following that it was "I mailed the check, but it got returned to me." Anthony's most recent story--after being told that I still hadn't yet received payment--was "oh, I thought you'd received it by now."

Pat S. is absolutely right. Anthony will pretend to be interested and responsive when you speak to him, but the moment you leave the room, he just tosses off any commitments he has made. He then becomes quite difficult to reach, and when you do manage to get in contact, he just strings you along further.

Keep in mind, this colossal runaround is set against the backdrop of Anthony agreeing the refund he owes me is legitimate. One can only begin to imagine how other disputes are handled.

Before you sign a contract with this gym, ask yourself why you'd want to do business with characters like this--especially given all of the other first class gyms available in Astoria.
