What Our Expert Scouts Say

May 15, 2013

You can find some of the best New York al fresco dining and people watching at the Gemma. Oh, and you can also find osmosis water inside the gemma too.

DON'T GO!!. one of the worst places I have been to in NYC. Been in the restaurant industry for years and this place is flat out bad. Waiters and Managers walk around with blindfolds on and weren't taught to speak when they were young. There are little twin boy band looking managers that also talk on about a 3rd grade level. Everyone is completely rude, no one knows anything about the food or the wine list. Tried many of the appez. I think I got two thin slices of tuna and a couple beans for about $15. Overpriced, oversalted everywhere. Do yourself a favor and walk right by this place. Can't even express how crappy this place is.

Mediocre brunch, horrible service. While I'm pretty patient with waiters, Gemma really tested my patience. Our waiter spent 15 minutes chatting with some ladies across the way, completely ignoring our table, forgetting to drinks and even bringing the complete wrong dish for one of us. When we were lucky enough to have his attention, he was unfriendly and unhelpful. The brunch was mediocre, the presentation lacking, and many of the dishes came with no sides - no toast, no potatoes, and, of course, no warning from our unhelpful waiter.

bad food in a theme park restaurant. I can honestly say that the worst meal I have had in a very long time was at Gemma. When you have a short wine by the glass list-there is no reason that each wine shouldn't be very good. All glasses ordered at my table were not good including 15-18 dollar ones!. From poor wine selections we progressed to bad olives! Next a salad of artichokes and truffle oil that was murky over done and sour. Next course dismal pizza with no flavor at all- no salt in the crust -not fresh ingredients. The service however was very good especially the bus boy.

Gemma is an overdone fake theme park that has more in common with chains restaurants than real Italian ones.

Good Food, Service Not So Good. We have been to this restaurant several times and feel the food is good and the service not so good. The wait staff was friendly, but often apologized for having to wait for food/bread/wine/water. The hostess was a brat and on more then one occasion. She was dismissive, too immature and unprofessional for the job. The dining experience should begin at the door. We would return for the food, but be embarrassed to bring guests with us.

Nice date place. Had dinner here last Friday night. It's a cute Italian place. Liked the ambience a lot. Food was h i t or miss--I thought the arugula salad and the rigatoni dish with prosciutto was amazing. The margherite pizza was blah to me. Gelati was heavenly--i think they get it from some gelati place downtown. Service was decent. No complaints. If you come, stay away from the pizza and get anything else I guess. I'd come again, but wouldn't wait if there's a line (we didn't have to wait on Friday night at 8 pm--but maybe cuz a lot of people were out of town. they dont take rsvps).

Great food!. Not sure if they've worked out the service kinks (because I've heard from several that the service was not-so-hot) but I went tonite and service and food were perfect. We had the salad with artichokes, truffle pizza, 2 crostinis, and gelati for dessert. Everything was delicious and the wine by the glass was great too. Love the outside area. Will be back!

Condescending and Downright Nasty Waiter . . .. I went to Gemma tonight with a few friends, and it was truly a terrible experience. When we arrived, we asked if the kitchen was still open, and the hostess said yes and sat us. From the moment our waiter approached us it was clear he wasn't happy to be serving us. He just had a sour, condescending look on his face and seemed annoyed that we were even there. When he came back with our water, my friend very congenially asked him how his night had been so far and he didn't even look at her--or any of us--directly; he just derisively spat some one word answer in an irritated tone, hastily poured the rest of our water (spilling some in the process) and got away from our table as fast as possible. We then had about four other people serving us over the course of the night, all ranging from irritated to just looking ready to go home (the original waiter never came back). We got there near the time the kitchen was closing (which they told us after we were already seated) . . . I understand that people have long days or whatever, but I would rather be told the kitchen is closed than spend money to be treated like a nuisance just for showing up. I've worked service jobs before and sometimes you end up working longer than you expected or wanted to, but that's no reason to take it out on the customer. We asked if they were still open, and we weren't the only ones there--if they didn't want us there, they shouldn't have let us sit down in the first place. Plus the fact that my friend was genuinely trying to be friendly and was met with such a mean-spirited attitude was just awful. I was so irritated by the terrible behavior of our first waiter that I couldn't even eat the food I'd ordered. My friends seemed to like the food enough, but I suppose I'll never find out if the food is any good for myself as there is no way I'm ever setting foot in this place again.

awesome food, spotty service, lousy drinks. we've been for brunch three or four times including this morning. we like to sit at the corner of the bar. every one there seem very nice, friendly, polite. just clueless. there must be a very high turnover at least at the bar because there always seems to be a new person there who doesn't exactly know the menu or where thing are. it's a it hard to get the the very nice bartender's attention even though we were one of very few people at the bar. the crowning disaster was the bloody mary. it was tasteless. we're fairly resourceful so i asked the bartender if he could bring me some horseradish, tobasco and worcestershire sauce. the horseradish and worcestershire appeared instantly. along with some pepper. he explained they don't have horseradish behind the bar because they use a mix for the bloodies. an abomination at a place this nice and not exactly cheap. someone competent really should take charge because it has all the elements of a great local restaurant. and unlike others we've never gotten the feeling we were eating at a hotel restaurant. the food is really, really good though. peace out.

Loved it. Got there at 9:30 on a saturday night and were told there'd be a 45 minute wait, but we were seated in less than 1/2 an hour. The service was good, as was the ambiance, wine, and food. We had the most delicious salad ever: fava beans, parmesan, radiccio, and mint. So lovely for a hot summer night.

WORST WAIT EVER!!!!. I went to Gemma last night on a Sat we got there at 7:50 and expected to wait. (there were more than 5 tables open at the time) They said about an hour ok they never came to tell us it would be longer. an hour and a 40 min later they sat us at a 3 top table (we were 4) with no apologies or a free drink . When we sat down it took another 20 min just to get bread. the wait staff does not have enough room to walk. they accomadate people who stay at the hotel first and they let people sit at the table for more than 2 hours. The food was okay considering the wait. We had pizza at the bar. "SO NOT WORTH GOING TO THIS RESTAURANT..."
