Editorial Review for Wakiya Gramercy Park Hotel – by Erin Behan
The Scene
Three words to describe the long corridor that serves as Ian Schrager's Chinese muse? How about sumptuous, modern and vampy. Its crimson carpet and fleur de lis wallcoverings contrast with dark wood tables, and gossamer-like threads separate the tables and their well-dressed guests from the central runway, er, walkway. Pleasant servers help to soften the menu's price tag.
The Food
Flavors are rewardingly subtle and ingredients top-notch throughout chef Yuji Wakiya's menu. Bang Bang chicken presents shredded chicken with a sesame-chile oil for a pleasing if mild opening. For hot and spicy, there's the fiery lobster, in which sizeable deep-fried chunks are hidden under a bed of spice-imparting Sichuan peppers. The Peking duck's coup is its crispy skin atop puffed crackers. Perhaps the most pleasing, albeit most simple, dish of all is the Noodle Shanghai, an upscale version of lo mein that'll make you wish Wakiya delivered.
Hits: The sceney crowd meets a Chinese menu with some deviations and some old favorites--all well-executed and artfully presented.
Misses: This isn't Chinatown--you'll pay a hefty price tag for the Wakiya experience.

Insider Tips
Know Before You GoReservations are booked weeks in advance, so call early, and be prepared for a response of "Would you prefer 6 or 9pm?"
Group DiningThere is one table that seats 10 and it's booked nightly for 6pm and 9:30pm.
What to DrinkThe bartenders know how to mix mean specialty cocktails--the cucumber martini is a nice foil to the menu's flavors--but beware the $14 price tag.
The ExtrasRun by a team from Nobu, this restaurant's menu is, like its predecessor, divided in many parts with cold dishes, soups, dim sum, hot dishes and a noodles and rice section all sharing space. The entire meal is meant to be shared.
