Editorial Review for Crave Ceviche Bar (Temporarily Closed) – by Jane Lerner
The Scene
Pretty, uptown girls cluster in the doorway of this crowded, 21-seat ceviche spot. The best seats are squeezed along the green marble bar, and a few two-tops huddle near the front windows that look out on Second Avenue. Keeping in theme with the sparkling, fresh menu, white brick walls and high stools that could be lifeguard chairs keep the vibe clean, bright and breezy.
The Food
Everything at Crave is acid-cured using a variety of tart liquids like citrus juice, Worcestershire sauce or vinegar. In some dishes, this conceit is brilliantly executed: The ancho-dusted popcorn sprinkled over the traditional shrimp ceviche is crunchy and peppery against the briny, lime-soaked seafood. But the arctic char, doused in champagne and served with bits of black truffle, caviar and strawberries, is a discomforting blur of flavors. Another disappointment is the tepid, untoasted bun that sandwiches both the lemon-cured beef sliders and the otherwise deliciously buttery lobster roll.
Hits: The creative menu of cured and marinated dishes offers a unique tour of straight-from-the-sea ceviches.
Misses: Though healthful and fresh, this is not hearty eating; it's quite possible to leave hungry.

Very pricey if you go very hungry but it is awesome service, awesome food, and AMAZING Sangria. It is also an awesome atmosphere. I definitely recommend it!
Pros: Atmosphere, sangria, everything

I wasn't sure what to expect when my girlfriend and I ventured into this intimate yet bustling spot on 2nd Ave, we'd passed it countless times and were wondering when, if ever, it was going to open... but we were repeatedly impressed and sometimes awed throughout the evening. My girl fell in love with both the taste and texture of the spicy yellowfin tuna on crisp seared yuca, and I was equally taken by the opulent preparation and multi-dimensional flavor profile of the arctic char. The chef's unique concepts flow throughout the meal here, very cool spot and we'll definitely be back soon.
