disgraceful service – I tend to restrain myself from ranting at bad service, as i recognize that any waiter can have a bad day, and I've seen too many people whining over trivial oversights. But in this case, I'll gladly make an exception and rant. I've never seen a restaurant run by such clueless and poorly trained people. We went there with a group of 10 for a special occasion, and it was essentially ruined by a staff that did pretty much everything wrong. Two of our party had to sit there with no food and watch the others eat, as nobody could find their orders. There were probably a dozen other problems which I'll save space and not bother listing. But this place was a joke. It would have made for an amusing skit on a parody show about how to be a moron, but unfortunately this was really happening, and they were attempting to charge non-joke money for the place. This is a disgrace. Who is in charge of this place?
Disrespecting Mom's of All Ages – I would like to relay a story of our experience with BLT Market this Mother's Day. We booked a reservation 3 weeks ago for 8 people; planning to celebrate with parents and grandparents and guaranteeing our reservation with a credit card for the $95 per person charge. On Friday, May 1st, we received a voice mail message from BLT Market stating that they could not honor our reservation but would be happy to move us to one of their other BLT restaurants where they had availability. We called back and spoke with John to confirm the message and he stated BLT Market had “decided to only serve brunch on Mother's Day”?! He promised to have the manager call us on Saturday. We did not get a call so we tried them again late Saturday afternoon and spoke with Steve (supposedly the manager) who had a different story. Steve told us that ConEd was planning to do some work in the building on Mother's Day Sunday night, that BLT Market thought they might not have electricity, but now the work has been moved to another week and they can accommodate our reservation. Interesting.
It would be conjecture to guess what the real explanation is for cancelling our reservation. We don’t know how many others were cancelled or whether some of those were also offered a reinstated reservation if they spoke up. Just as likely, BLT Market decided there was a more profitable use for the space and chose to yank some of their clients around.
Needless to say we have no intention of going to BLT Market, or any of BLT's other restaurants, again. Not on Mother's Day or any other time. And we hope that many of you agree. No business should show such disrespect for its customers (especially Mothers!) and not pay for it. We are interested if anyone else has had a similar experience.
Save your money – Mediocre food, totally overpriced. And the staff was incredibly rude to us! After paying close to $100 each for one glass of wine and an entree apiece, plus a shared dessert, we apparently lingered too long at the table--we were asked to vacate it. Unbelievable. So not worth it.
AVOID AVOID AVOID – Took my Father, Boyfriend and Mother there for her birthday brunch (ran into Richard Lewis on our way in). Had to wait 20min past our reservation time to be seated at one of the six empty tables. We were then greeted by a less than nice waitress who proceeded to explain that the $35 Brunch Menu includes one item on the Menu except for the bottom of the menu which tags on an extra $10. We sort of knew that going in but thought there would be more to it such as some bread for the table. Nothing came. We had to wait another 15 min for our drinks. When the food came it was okay. Nothing special. I have had much nicer brunches on the Upper West Side and for less.
The best part was that I paid with my Debit card and gave a tip in cash so that the waitress will not get taxed. When I checked my checking account this morning, I had an extra $40+ billed to my account. When I called the Ritz Carlton accounting department to report it, I had to leave a voicemail message. I'm still waiting for a reply.
Does Not Meet Ritz Carlton Finesse – Mesdames and Messieurs We are talking about some basic service skills here. Our food showed-up noticably late. No recognition by the maitre d'hotel and Server At all. French Fries served in this French restaurant was extra soggy and service showed poor presentation . Simpy BLT brand does not fit in Ritz Carlton Crowd.
So Long Fair Well
Best of both worlds – Refined cuisine - but feels "neighborhoody." We walked in on a busy Wed and although we had a short wait, we were charmed by Norman the bartender. He is the bartender that knows your name, drink, and how to solve life's little banalities. Similarly, the sommelier was very knowledgeable and very accessible; he didn't mind the myriad of questions and we ended up with a red we'll definitely drink again. The foie gras was fantastic -- and the lemon mille-feuille was a perfect way to end the meal (very light). We really enjoyed the experience overall; the decor is warm and homey...not at all what we would expect from a Ritz-Carlton in Midtown.
Not Attentive At All – I want to start off by saying, I have been to all the other BLT restaurants in Manhattan (numerous times) and also BLT Steak in Puerto Rico . The service at BLT Market was substandard. We had a 6:15 reservation for dinner- not a busy time at all. Our drink order was taken- received our drinks. After waiting and waiting and waiting- we finally had to ask someone to take our order. We asked for another loaf of bread- never came, we had to ask again. After finishing our first round of drinks- we were NEVER asked if we would like anyhting else to drink. We had a question regarding the dessert menu- we had to interrupt a personal conversation between 3 of the waitstaff that was happening to the right of us to get someones attention. Then finally we had to flag someone down for the check after once again waiting.
SERVICE-TERRIBLE!!!!! I would never go back to BLT Market.
We were asked to LEAVE – Apparently, we took too long to finish our dessert because we were asked to leave. . .three times! First the waiter told us that someone was waiting for our table, then the maitre d' and then the hostess! What restaurant asks you to leave?? And the food really isn't that great. With so many fabulous restaurants in NYC, don't waste your time here!
Total Garbage – Too expensive, mediocre food, and some of the worst service I have ever had in New York. If this place gets even one star, I'm going to hunt Frank Bruni down myself and ask him if he's mental. Is it possible to spend more money on a worse experience? Everything was oversalted. Our sommelier only offered wines over $150. I had to flag a waiter down to get a refill on my tap water. If this is fine dining, I'd prefer a triple pounder from McDonald's.
The restaurant needs time – I am a huge fan of the other BLT restaurants; however, my lunch experience at Market was disappointing. I realize that they are still trying to get into their stride, only being open for about 2 months, but I'm not certain if they are going to be able to fix their major service glitch. Basically, the service staff is quite good and does a great job but the kitchen takes FOREVER!! We were waiting for our appetizers for about 20 minutes - I got soup, it shouldn't be hard. There was an additional 25 minute pause between our apps and entrees and even the coffee took 10 minutes to be served. Not good. Also, I think that they should re-think their bread concept....I love the bread at BLT Fish and BLT Steak, but the garlic bread didn't do the trick. I'll probably try the restaurant again in a few months to see if they've ironed out some of the glitches.
