“The space is charming, as is the staff, who remember everyone.”
“Fantastic neighborhood restaurant - worth visiting from another neighborhood!”
“Our service was friendly but very slow, and worst of all the restaurant was freezing cold and my poor chair, which had paint drips on it was creaking and swaying back and forth.”
Overpriced for a place with WOBBLY CHAIRS!!. I was invited to Dinner at Square Meal last week. The food was decent, but not worth the prices AT ALL! I have eaten all over the city and I can tell you that this place is OVERPRICED. Our service was friendly but very slow, and worst of all the restaurant was freezing cold and my poor chair, which had paint drips on it was creaking and swaying back and forth. I am not a picky person, and I did not complain because I didn't want to upset my dear friend who chose this place, but a $100 dinner for two should help these people buy some new chairs, because I felt like I was at Coney Island. Do yourself a favor, go next door and eat at Yura's on madison, because its mostly the same food and you will save loads of cash.

This is one of my favorite restaurants in NYC. It is owned by Yura of Yura on Madison - and the food is even better! I've had wonderful pork dishes and chicken dishes for dinner - and their crabcakes are wonderful!

Upscale takes on meatballs, chicken and other classic American fare on the Upper East Side..
In Short
Small, cozy, and comfortable, Square Meal aspires only to serve high-quality comfort food to beleaguered Upper East Siders, and this it does to their satisfaction. Bright and airy, and set into the basement of a handsome brownstone, it's an ideal place to stop for the proverbial "nice piece of chicken" or a haimish meat loaf. Some may find the prices out of line for food this downscale, but this is the Upper East Side, after all.
