“The ambiance was terrific.”
“excellent beer selection, top-notch wines (not your regular bar vino selection, that's for sure) friendly staff, and always plenty of aussie AND american sports.”
“The side of marinated mushrooms was a great treat- but there could've been more to the order.”

“It's a great place to meet people, or go with a large group.”
“The main guys are Aussie, but the service is more attentive than you'd get there.”
“Amazing menu (can be expensive, but the appetizer tasting platter is a great deal and includes my favorite snapper/crab cigars and the sticky prawns!)”
“Staff are friendly, quick to get a beer, food is sensational.”
This was such a fun bar to go to for happy hour on a Friday!!! They had some awesome appetizers that were half off, so a friend and I split a meat pie appetizer. It came perfect with two little meat pies that we didn't have to cut in half. For dinner, we each got a different meal, so that we could experience more of the menu. There were just too many things we wanted to try. We ended up getting the curry vegetable pie, and I forget what the other meal was called, but it was lamb with roasted potatoes and veggies, with a side of mint jelly. Both were pretty good. Another friend got the nachos, and it was ridiculously good. I think they put mango chutney in it, which gave it the unique, but awesome flavor that I've never had with other nachos that I've tried. Overall, I would come back here again.
this is a great spot to meet up with friends who work in the area and grab an after work drink. Happy Hour here is truly Happy for me, and the Dark & Stormy is phenomenal here....I mean, truly life changing. They also serve pretty good food, your typical appetizers, and a few Australian-themed meals as well. There's an upstairs area, as well as a good amount of seating in the back, booth seating. yay!
You might know this as the Redskins bar
and even if you aren't a fan you should go here. Anytime the Redskins score a TD, you get a complementary shot.
Happy hour is 4PM-7PM, Monday-Friday with $4 drafts, $5 well, $5 wine or a 24oz Fosters can for $6. All very sound choices, but the happy hour bar snacks are not to be slept on. The prices are in the $5-$7 and range everything from sausage rolls to calamari. We opted for the nachos which were $6. Sour cream, guacamole, cheese, corn, carrot, sweet chili sauce made me say oh my god yes. These were some of the best nachos I've had in a bar in forever. Forever? Forever-ever? Forever-ever? Yup they are on a 2000 Outkast level
Just ok. Large place; not too loud. Good prices for happy hour. Waitress could have been more friendly. Biggest disappointment....the 4 pieces of rubbery calamari.
worst place in newyork. this place gives australia a bad name the manager was the rudest person we met in the usa wish we never went there.
Stay Far Away. I used to love this place, but I just ate there and it was horrible. My burger was way overcooked and my wife' s food arrived cold--not even room temperature--but actually cold. They reheated her food (not giving her a new dish, just microwaved what she'd already bit into) but it was still not warm. Just awful.
A must try! You will be hooked!.
I just wanted to give a shout out to The Australian! I have been going to the Australian since its opening 3 years ago. Not only is the food amazing and the staff very friendly, but the owner Matt goes above & beyond. Usually the owner of a restaurant is no where to be found, but Matt is consistently interacting with his guests and making sure everyone is well taken care of. When he isn’t working hard at the restaurant, he also dedicates his time to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, serving on their “A Taste of Down Under” committee raising funds to help send kids with neuromuscular disease to MDA Summer Camp. I have attended a few of his MDA fundraisers at his restaurant and they are so much fun! Keep up the great work!
I just can’t say enough about this place. And you must try the The Australian burger. YUM!!!!
THE after work bar - great wine, great food, great crowd. I've been going to The Australian since the first day it opened it's doors 3 years ago, and it continues to be one of my favourite after work bars. The staff are always friendly - and Matt, you rock, don't know what that last review was thinking (perhaps they bid for you in the auction and got knocked out?). The patrons likewise are generally chatty and a great group to network with or build camaraderie over the latest sporting event gracing the many large TV screens behind the bar. Top that with a delicious range of wines and great food - the must have happy hour special - veggie nachos, and you'll continue to make me a happy girl! Thank you Matt and the Australian for 3 years of laughs, the best sausage rolls I've ever had and great Australian holiday celebration parties - keep up the good work!
Great atmosphere and food, but owner needs a new personality. I used to go to the australian constantly and thought the staff were superb, but the owner Matt really has a very poor and obnoxious personality, and I finally decided to go elsewhere since I like to spend my hard earned cash somewhere its appreciated. Other friends of mine (who are even australian) have mentioned the same experience with him If he wants more business he should learn how to be friendlier.
Friendly owners, great atmosphere, unique beers and wines. Knew the owners from their upper east side spot, Ship of Fools, but The Australian is head and shoulders better than that bar! Amazing menu (can be expensive, but the appetizer tasting platter is a great deal and includes my favorite snapper/crab cigars and the sticky prawns!), excellent beer selection, top-notch wines (not your regular bar vino selection, that's for sure) friendly staff, and always plenty of aussie AND american sports. They always put on the baseball game I request! In fact, I just might head over there tonight. Only thing I don't like is the location.
