The Scene
In this sleek Alphabet City eatery named after the chefs' daughter, cacti and candles top the white tables, while a dated pop soundtrack (hello, Lenny Kravitz) is kept low to enable couples' conversations. Additional eye candy comes in the form of a colorful chandelier and walls adorned with Spanish and Italian words.
The Food
Husband-and-wife duo Maristella Innocenti and Esteban Molina meld Tuscan and Mexican cookery to intriguing, yet middling results. The fritto misto is a mound of lightly fried chayote, poblanos and oceanic delights, served aside piquant chipotle and pineapple-jalapeno dips, while the nachos tartufati take this football snack to transcendent heights with huitlacoche and black-truffle olive oil. Entrees mostly disappoint, like the herb-heavy filet mignon and the fishy roasted salmon lacking the promised tequila and fennel flavors. Salvation, though, arrives with superb desserts like house-made organic gelati and sorbetti and, if available, still-warm churros drizzled with savory chocolate.
Hits: Entree-size appetizers are the menu's all-stars.
Misses: The cooks can go hog wild with spices, overpowering otherwise succulent cuts of meat.

My friend and I decided to give Matilda a try based on a recommendation. We had the absolute best time! Our waiter was so funny and entertaining I started crying I was laughing so hard! The table next to us was celebrating an anniversary and chef made a cake and shared it with the whole restaurant. We were also presently surprised it was ladies night and we got to drink for free. That's right ladies get half off mixed drinks and unlimited free wine every Tuesday. Yes, ladies all you can drink for free! The menu is an interesting Mexican Italian fusion and both our meals were very good. If you are looking to put your worries behind you and enjoy yourself in a great atmosphere I definitely recommend checking out Matildas! It is so cute!

What to Drink:
On the beer-and-wine-only drink list is a fizzy prosejito ($10), a Prosecco mojito served in a Dos Equis pint glass and decorated with fresh mint.
Look Good:
Don't ask for the drinks and dessert menu: It awaits inside a recessed nook in your table.
Lunch:
Lunch offers numerous toothsome, inventive sandwiches. Opt for prosciutto and mozzarella painted with pineapple-habanero-parsley sauce ($8) or avocado shrimp topped with Tex-Mex pesto ($8).
