Editorial Review for Market Table – by Justin Hartung

The Scene
The wizards behind Little Owl, Joey Campanaro and Gabriel Stulman, hope lighting strikes twice with this West Village spot. With its wood-beamed ceiling, butcher block tables and a drawing of a lantern on a chalkboard wall, the decor insinuates "country" without knocking you over the head with a rolling pin about it. But don't be fooled by all the bucolic trimmings: Scoring a prime-time table is harder than finding a needle in a haystack.

The Food
Joining the team is a Mermaid Inn vet, chef Michael Price, whose simply conceived seafood dishes provide the highlights on the New American menu. Chubby, bacon-wrapped scallops repose in an heirloom tomato and cucumber puree that highlights the mollusks sweetness, while flaky swordfish with an ultrafresh roasted corn and avocado salad eats like a seaside picnic. Land-bound fare trips a bit, including chicken saddled with oversalted, if thoroughly crispy, skin and, for dessert, a flavorless banana bread pudding.

Hits:
The combination of low-key aesthetic and high-end buzz will ensure the flocks of Little Owl overflow.

Misses: With the exception of Price's seafood, the menu's stumbles don't quite live up to that buzz.

Insider Tips

What to Drink

The cocktail menu is terrific, affordable (many drinks clock in at under $10) and includes concoctions made with unexpected ingredients like Manischewitz and PBR. The $8 Boqueria tastes like a cold, refreshing version of Scandinavian gloog.

Know Before You Go

Reservations are tough to score--call ahead a month in advance for the best time slots.

The Extras

The adjoining market sells goods used in the dishes, including meats from Pat LaFrieda, who also supplies Little Owl.

Fun Fact

At the end of the meal, receipts come tucked into books, ranging from rock bios to "The Chocolate Connoisseur."

Went on a Tuesday night, had the market special - a grilled branzino with raisins, sweet onions, kale? and little slices of lemon and garlic. It was so terrifically well done I wanted to lick the plate. Also the monkfish dish was very good, but not a standout. The crabcake appetizer was also excellent. The wine was superb but too pricey. The staff is pretty rude, especially the hostess, but i think i ll be going back just for the food. It is hard to get top-notch fish in this city (that s not lathered in butter and bacon or transmuted into a foam, Bernardin-style). Simple is best with fish, and this chef clearly knows how to do simple very well.

Pros: Superb seafood dishes

Cons: Rude staff

Market table pays their attention to detail. Great decor, polite service, excellent food! The lamb shank is divine! Very interesting wine selecion. I am not sure about the concept of the place, but it works out very pleasantly :)

Pros: great decor, food and service
