Editorial Review for MUJI – by Keith Wagstaff
In Short
No large corporate logos, no flashy designs--that is the philosophy of this successful Japanese retailer, which puts a premium on simple chic. Shoppers with a polished hipster aesthetic browse through the products, which all share a similar modern, minimalist look: Ceramic house wares, furniture, stationery, men's and women's clothing, storage bins, mechanical pencils and so much more. The brand's subtle and innovative designs are versatile enough to look as natural in a Williamsburg loft as they do in an Upper West Side condo.
Hits: From a new wool coat to chopsticks to a file cabinet, there isn't much you can't find in this store--and the relatively low prices don't hurt either.
Misses: A few of the products cross the line from understated to boring, making you wonder if you can't just find something similar for less at Target.
