small portions high price – I was looking for Thai and somehow got there. The Thai restaurant is next door Thai Angel much better.
Headline says it all.
Classic Find – Everyonce in awhile you stumble upon one of those local unknown finds. This is one. Just a good place for food, period. The pho is delicious, try the king crab spring roll.
MR LAM – MR LAm, doesn't know how to run the restaurant.. Since the chef Michael Bao left last year.. The dishwasher taken over the kitchen.., :-)
dos and don'ts of running a restaurant – At the door:
Do get the time and number in the party right when you take reservations.
Do not offer seats at the bar when they are taken.
Do not say ?you?re next? then seat other tables.
At the table:
Do ensure you know which tables you are serving.
If you don?t know anything about the drinks or food, do find somebody who does.
Do not think that ?it?s my first night? is an acceptable excuse.
Do not come to take orders long after food and drink were ordered.
Do answer a question the tasting menu, if not the first, then the second or third time it is asked, especially if you?ve been told that the party contains a non-meat and a non-shellfish eater.
Do not say the shrimp rolls are suitable for a non-meat eater when they contain roast pork.
Do not call the tasting menu ?unlimited? if it is a single bite of a 6 or 7 dishes.
If your menu is a sampler, do bring one bite of each dish per person.
Do bring the extra dishes ordered.
If a dish is sent back or if an extra dish is not brought out, do ensure that neither is on the check.
If you?re the self-proclaimed manager/bartender/busboy:
Do not think that having new staff come in at 5 pm as the doors are opening for the week?s most popular event constitutes sufficient training.
Do not be proud of serving thimble-sized drinks for $9.50.
Do not explain that nobody could make basil mussels right until the dishwasher came up with the recipe.
After admitting that the same dish was ?not very good?, do not explain that the cooks didn?t have time to cook the dishwasher?s sauce properly.
Instead, do remove from the menu anything you don?t know how to cook and serve.
Do not corner a clearly dissatisfied, but still good-natured table as they are about to leave to explain about new staff, cooks who can't follow recipes or the fact that you?ve tried every single drink and they didn?t give you a headache.
Do not expect to stay in business very long.
A Gem in Manhattan – I really love this place. I have been back twice, once for lunch and another time for dinner. The food is great, I'm not really familiar with vietnamese food so I didn't know what to expect, but was more than pleasantly surprised, it was amazing. The signature shrimp dish was unbeleivable, and the deserts fantastic. One of the owners, Tony, intorduced himself to my boyfriend and was extremely warm and friendly. I will without a doubt be going back soon.

When Michael Bao Huynh (Mai House) and co-financer Warren Cuccurullo (ex-Missing Persons musician) team up for a restaurant, what do you get? A New Wave take on a Vietnamese diner, duh. The cheeky panel-lined booths, lime green walls, and beaded Asian lanterns hanging above scoop stools at the bar all make a playfully pretty backdrop for the crowd, a mix of Chinatown locals and pho-craving outsiders.
The buns in the oven are actually Vietnamese small plates called b'un (pronounced "boone,") which are substantial enough to share between a few people. Winners include hanger steak tossed with apples, mint and Asian mustard greens, juicy guinea hen chunks cooked in an iron pot, and shrimp sliced into lace-thin carpaccio. Bungles? A shallowly spiced pho and dull lamb lollipops that bring up the wrong connotation of "suck." For dessert, dumplings float in a broth that surprises with both sweet and salty flavors.
Hits: The mod decor and well-presented plates add a visual panache the neighborhood lacks.
Misses: Misfires like pho make a case for substance over style.
Great food! – went to Bun last week to try it out with some girlfriends. I didn't know that it was tapas style until i got there, but then i got to try so many different dishes it really worked out well. i had the quail (for the first time YUMMY), the lab skewers (meat slid off the bone) and the chicken pho (had an egg in it!!) and the wild boar sausages. All i can say is HECK YES and YUM. I have never had Vietnamese food before and i loved it. The bill was $60 per person and that included wine. all in all great new place.
Small Portion and Expensive for Vietnamese Food – They do charge a lot for the small portion of food (especially in terms of Vietnamese). From my experience, any tapa style asian food is simply not worth it. You might call it "fushion", but I would rather have an authentic full-size meal instead. We ordered the lamb rolls, tiger shrimps (4 little pieces per order), mussels, two tiny b'un (one with beef and one with veggies), 2 desserts and 2 glasses of wine. I would not tell you the price in here but let's say it was enough to have a nice steak for two at Peter Luger with drinks or appetizers. Even though I like elegant food, this is not the type of place that I would go back.
Fantastic Tasty Little Place – My girlfriend and I decided to pop in tonight and give the new place a try. Oh my god what a find - delicious! Our meal began with moist spare ribs wrapped around lemon grass sticks - excellent. Next we received a sizzling plate of King Crab/Pork spring rolls that came with fresh lettuce and mint and an order of Duck Rolls (with slices of apple inside). Just when we though it couldn't get any better along came the Tiger Shrimp in a delicious spicy broth - some of the best I've ever had. To finish we devoured a 'bun' of noodles, herbs, and juicy rare pieces of beef - mmmmmmm. All of the food was fresh and non-greasy. We can't wait to go back....
