The Scene – This East Village brasserie makes the most of its former Pizzeria Uno space. Subway-tile walls and retro black-and-white portraits set a smart Gotham tone without being too gimmicky, and while the restaurant may not be as hip as other neighborhood entries, it offers an all-embracing attitude toward its clientele. – – The Food – The kitchen maintains consistency with brasserie plates that are tweaked enough to keep the meal interesting. A pot of mussels benefits from a mustard-laced broth, while the string bean salad has a vivacious snap, enhanced by fresh…
Editor's Tips
- Save Money:
- On Sunday nights, a burger and a beer goes for $12.
- What to Drink:
- The cocktails appeal to adult tastes with choices like the Cucumber Loco (a margarita made with muddled cucumber) and the Red Stone, prepared with bourbon and blood orange juice.
- The Extras:
- For dinner and a movie, catch a flick at the AMC theater across the street or the Regal Union Square a few blocks away.

Service is good and so are the drinks. The food is great too if you're willing to wait since this place is always busy. Fun spot for brunch!
Ciao Bella Now Uses Fillers in their Ice Cream!
by wallystump at Citysearch
Diasppointed to see that many (all? - we had their chocolate and triple espresso) of their ice creams now use
- Guar Gum
- Locust Bean Gum
- Carrageenan
all at the same time. Yikes! We loved the ice cram they make, but now won't touch it. Had some lately and wondered why it tasted funny. Then we read the list of ingredients. Looks like the expansion of their business drove a once great brand to focus more on profits than on the quality that got them to the top.
"The Smith" breaks "The Curse"
by Polish Guy at Citysearch
When the Smith moved in to its current location on Third Avenue, I thought: “Well, this won’t last long.” After all, that particular address seemed to be cursed by a string of unsuccessful business ventures, including the most recent casualty – Pizzeria Uno. After actually going in and trying the food, I can gladly say that I was dead wrong. The Smith offers something that I haven’t seen in this area before – good, reasonably priced comfort food in a cool but unassuming setting. As for food – the burger-and-beer deal on some nights is great. The mashed potatoes are some of the best in the city (I’m not sure why, but I’ll hazard a guess that there’s sour cream in them – trust me, they’re amazing), and the mac and cheese is better than most. For breakfast, you have to try the Croker – it’s essentially a heartattack in a skillet (hence the name) – consisting of eggs, ham, and sourdough bread, all on a bed of home fries. Amazing. Unfortunately, everyone else thinks this place is amazing too, which is why it’s become quite crowded during peak dinner and brunch hours. If you’re looking for something comfortable, fun, and low-maintenance, this place is definitely worth the wait.
- Pros: Great Food Across the Board
- Cons: Usually Crowded
Chic Hangout for brunch and dinner
by Athena Chang , Citysearch Contributor at Citysearch
I like every dish I have ordered here. The menu is simple but every dish is made well. It is not gourmet but it is good enough for you to enjoy a good time with friends and its ambiance.
- Pros: Chic atmosphere, trendy crowd & good food
