Editorial Review for Kellari's Parea – by Aaron Barker

The Scene
The cool modernism of the former Parea is exchanged for the warmer trappings of an Ionian tavern, with aged oak wine barrels and earthy textures of stone and wood. In other ways the vibe feels decidedly Gramercy: You'd be forgiven for assuming there was a jacket requirement when surveying the crowd, and servers are versed in the old-school tradition of mannered deference.

The Food
A complimentary starter of olives and kefalograviera cheese sets an auspicious tone for the up-market, all-organic Greek fare. Fresh yellow tomatoes and pimientos add zing to a salad, and a similar balsamic-style base marinates fleshy octopus sprinkled with capers. Entrees are so large the table literally needs to be extended. "Yesterday's Lamb" is marinated overnight, oven-roasted, and served seeping juice into oregano potatoes, while whole grilled bass is rich and buttery. Desserts show characteristic Greek restraint: Sheep's milk yogurt with thyme honey and tart cherries has a light, effortless touch.

Hits: The kitchen doesn't overextend itself or resort to gimmickry; and its back-to-basics approach is a refreshing one.

Misses:
Final tally might seem a bit stiff for those not afraid of jaunts to Astoria.

Insider Tips

What to Drink

Kellari's wine is list Greek-heavy, but still navigable if you're not up on local vintners--it's listed by varietal and servers are confident in their knowledge.

The Extras

The restaurant is a spin-off of Kellari's Tavern, a buttoned-up spot in Midtown that's a hit with the business crowd.

Group Dining

The restaurant already encourages group dining with sharable plates, but a cave-like wine cellar downstairs ups the ante for private parties.

We had a female waitress on sat nite. She was horrible. Forgot to put our order in. Messed up our drinks twice. Truly an amatuer! When the food arrived, it arrived at different times and was cold. Must have been sitting around for a while. We truly hated this place.

Pros: nice room

Cons: bad food/service

I have been to this restaurant 3 times now and it really is extremely tasty, great quality and has unique Greek specialties. I highly recommend getting a bunch of different appetizers to share. The Greek salad is very fresh, the shrimp in tomato with feta is awesome, the fish is very fresh and tasty. Even the olive and oil and cheese they give you with the bread at the start is AMAZING! perfect spot for a group dinner with friends or family!

Pros: Clean, Tasty Fresh Yummy
