Movers great, customer service/sales unreliable/dishonest

The movers and guys working at the storage unit are so friendly and helpful. They took great care with my belongings. The pricing for the move and storage are very competitive. HOWEVER, The sales reps are the complete opposite. They have very poor communication skills, tell you one thing on the phone, then completely retract what they tell you later. If you use this service, get everything confirmed via e-mail. They will lie to cover themselves (including the manager, Austin).

would sooner tie my belongings to my back and make multiple trips schlepping them myself than EVER using them or making a positive referral. My story: we had Schleppers scheduled for a month to move my daughter from a studio apartment in Dobbs Ferry, NY to a studio apartment in Riverdale, Bronx--a simple, easy move. The move was scheduled Monday early morning the first move of the day the Monday following Thanksgiving weekend.
Six days prior to this scheduled move, my mother unexpectantly died. We arranged the funeral and our airline tickets(we had to fly half way across the country to St. Louis, Mo) to work around our daughter's scheduled move and communicated with Schleppers regarding all being on track and our circumstances. They said all was good, our move was going to take place first thing Monday Nov 28th, we would move our daughter and then catch an evening flight in time to make the Tuesday funeral.
Wednesday afternoon, the day before Thanksgiving, Schleppers calls to tell us they can not do our move Monday morning, but will do it Monday afternoon. We again explained our situation and that we had a flight to make to attend my mother's funeral and the move had to take place in the morning, not the afternoon.
For over a month, Schleppers had assured us that our move was scheduled and good to go. 3pm Wednesday the DAY BEFORE THANKSGIVING, Schleppers calls to rearrange our move. We dealt with Austin --who was totally inflexible and insensitive not to mention irresponsible in dealing with our move and situation. Thank you Austin, thank you Schleppers--you helped make one of life's tragedies even more painful and difficult to deal with. Shame on you!! Shame, shame, shame!!!
Broken Dreams and Broken Furniture

Run unless you are 100% insured. They destroyed some really nice furniture and scuffed some many of the other things.
They disobeyed the rules of our COOP and didn't wrap anything. Our Super was not in for the day of the move and I guess that gave them license to ignore all the the rules we had explained.
Moved everything out through the front door instead of the service entrance.
You must tell them to wrap everything even though Derek their salesman stated that they do this with all the furniture.
They had quoted that they would crate up the art on the walls. Instead carried it in without even a blanket.
Cracked mirror, Broken Desk, scrapped the front of our night stands, Scuffed a frame for a large painting. Left our bikes and the large painting sitting on the loading area unsupervised behind our building after they were forced into using the service entrance.
NEVER USE THEM!
Callous/Robbers/Liars

As per BBB, there have been an unacceptable 23 official complaints(most with product/services, but also delivery and sales) against this company, not including my future official complaint.
-broke $2500 TV and $100 lamp, that Nicola (sales rep who first spoke with us) told us we could not individually insure, then forced us to sign with threats of charging us more, if we wouldn’t sign 30cents/pd. They packed both of these, in their own boxes (see more below)
-stole my ipod, and brand new clothes (see more below).
-we saw Gerard (a foreman) callously break our big mirror that attaches to a desk. He picked it up not by the base, but a wooden 2” by 4” attachment board, which would obviously not hold the weight of this heavy mirror. He promised that the company has two repair men that could come fix it, which as per the company, he lied. No one came to fix it.
-Also broke lots of wine glasses and dishes.
-Bad indentations and scratches on ALL of our bedroom set. Gerard said someone would come fix this, to no avail.
- We received someone else’s decorations. Who know what is missing from our stuff that we do not realize.
-Without permission, they packed away my work uniform even though I explicitly told them not to touch a certain pile (which also had my stolen ipod and clothes, several times.
-Lots of hidden charges that you will find out along the way. Only one example, no one told us that they charge us for the time to put into storage.
-4 Roaches and waterbugs (both dead and alive) in the boxes. Also mice droppings (I was an exterminator for 15 years).
-Very rude and disparaging, mainly Margaret, from claims. She is extremely condescending and not the least sympathetic. My wife did not fell comfortable speaking to her.
MAIN ISSUE
They broke a 2500 plasma TV and 100 dollar lamp and stole my ipod and new, tagged clothes (more on this below). THEY packed/unpacked the TV and lamp in THEIR own boxes. Since the first sales representative Nicola told us they we could NOT insure individual, more valuable boxes like we would have wanted (The company will lie and say she would not have said this and also argue that she is not qualified to let us know about the insurance, which should not up to the customer’s discretion to determiner if a Sales Rep is qualified or not). Therefore, we did not further inquire into extra insurance, which we would have liked for certain boxes. She should have told us that she did not know about the insurance or you have to call, but she did not.
Then they forced us to sign 30cents/pounds, even after or they would not leave and keep on charging us the hourly rate. Where we signed, it says “Unless the shipper expressly releases the shipment to a value of 30 ( ) cents per pound per article, the carrier’s maximum liability for loss and damage shall be either the lump sum value declared by the shipper of 2500, whichever is greater”.
When I asked the company about this statement, they try to twist it and make it more confusing and wordy then it need to be. This is meant to seem that you may get up to $2500. Gerard, the foreman who forced us to sign, probably lied or at least not knowingly told us that we could get more than the 30cents/pd, and closer to the 2500 that is stated above. We tried calling the company before we signed for some clarity and assurance but no one was conveniently there to pick up the phone. We were forced into signing and promised this we would be worked out later on. It was not at all as well were only promised about 311.50 (as we found out several weeks later). No one in their right mind would sign something valuing at 30 cents per pound after they see their 2500 TV is broken. There was duress. It is a contract of adhesion, and thus should be unenforceable (especially since we were initially told by Nicola that we could individually insure each box!).
Honest and Reliable Movers

Shleppers made what is normally a stressful task, hassle free.
We originally had two movers come by to get quotes on moving out of Brooklyn to Long Island. The other group was double what Shleppers quoted us as. We were given an hourly rate, which worried us slightly, but we ended up paying $200 less than the estimated hourly quote.
The moving team that was sent was beyond incredible. They were polite, efficient, and fast and we couldn’t have asked for any more. We have nothing but glowing reviews for them. Nothing was broken, ruined or stolen.
The move took 4 hours from start to finish and that's including the 1 hour and 45 minute drive to the new apartment!! And this was on a Friday morning!
Normally, people say, "anything that can go wrong, will go wrong", but this experience was the complete opposite. The relocation specialist and the sales team was through and helpful. Any questions we had were quickly answered.
We received their recommendation from a sibling from when they moved out of the city to Long Island around 8 years ago. With that, we will (and have) recommend Shleppers to anyone we know who is moving.
