Editorial Review for Kuta Satay House – by Jane Lerner
The Scene
Kuta Satay House is many waves away from the surfer's mecca of Kuta Beach, Bali. But island details--menus made of rough-hewn wood, over-the-top flowers--add equatorial flair to the otherwise city-sleek room. Squeezed into the corridor-like space is the expected cast of downtown kids on iPhones. Service, while resolutely friendly, can be strangely scattered.
The Food
Who doesn't love meat on a stick? Befitting the restaurant's name, satays are top-notch among a menu of Indonesian and Southeast Asian specialties. Flavors are fierce: Intoxicating lemongrass and kaffir lime dominate the Balinese shrimp, while ground coriander speckles the surface of tender beef. Unusual salads are worthwhile, like the Bandung duck, a fusion-y mix of crispy duck and goat cheese, or the fruity Sundanese Rujak, with roasted tofu so savory it could be mistaken for meat. The more familiar entrees, like pad thai or cashew chicken, are oily versions that don't transcend average takeout.
Hits: With seriously spiced satays, Kuta is an inexpensive and welcome addition to the city's paltry Indonesian dining scene.
Misses: Attempts at more mainstream dishes don't hold up as well; stick with the skewers, and don't graze too far out of the archipelago.

Insider Tips
Know Before You GoThe namesake satays are priced two to an order and are served with a refreshing cucumber relish.
What to DrinkLighter beers like Singha or Tiger temper the spicy flavors of Southeast Asian cooking, as do any of the soju and sake cocktails. Reasonably priced wines by the glass (all are under $9, and no bottle tops $38) include a light but complex Pinot Noir from Les Jamelles.
Prix Fixe MenusFor $25, Kuta offers an excellent deal: four courses, including satay, starter, entree and dessert.

I've eaten at Kuta House twice and have nothing but praise for the staff, food, and atmosphere. I had heard about it through a friend who had a great experience there. Check it out.

A good friend of mine insisted that I try this restaurant. I went and I was blown away by the service, food, and the ambiance. The waiters were extremely friendly and accomodating. The food was amazing, especially the shrimp skewers and crabcakes. It actually felt as though the food was imported straight from Indonesia. and for those of you who like to drink, they have amazing sangrias!! I have been to Kuta about 4 times now, because I can't get enough of it and every time, the food has been excellent. And did I forget to mention, that the food is very affordable and you get alot for your $.
Pros: amazing food, great service, sangria's rock
Cons: Kuta and cons, has to be an oxymoron..
