Cannonau is the newest addition to the East Village in Manhattan. This warm & comfortable osteria, formerly Assenzio, is a one of a kind Italian restaurant serving authentic cuisine from Sardinia, Italy. Cannonau brings Italian traditions to NY including the classic drink of the artists and poets, Absinthe (Assenzio). Sit with friends & family while enjoying the finest foods & wines from this exotic Italian island. Essential plates are the Porcetto Sardo al Mirto - traditionally prepared suckling pig baked over fresh myrtle leaves. And Fregola With Clams - an Italian dish akin to couscous served with clams. Finish your evening with the Sardinian staple, a shot of Mirto liquor & ice cream. Dine at Cannonau on Tues & Wed to sample some of Sardinia's best wines made from the Cannonau grape. Private & holiday parties can be accommodated. Make a reservation tonight or place a pick-up order.

I went in here on a friday night after reading great reviews. I must say that as good as the reviews were, my experience was even better. Our food was delicious. I ate the pappardelle and my date had the polenta. Both were fantastic. We shared a bottle of cannonau (sardignian red wine), for which the restaurant is named, and it was great. Our waiter was Italian, which was a nice touch. Plus the bartender, a new yorker who spoke Italian, made a great mojito before we sat down. All in all, I had an amazing experience and will definitely be going back soon.

On East 4 St, there are many Italian restaurants and we tried to go to Perbacco (40 min wait on Sat), and then to In Vino (full house & super loud), but no luck. So, my hus picked this restaurant to try. It also was full but the owner tried to accomodate us right away. Elderly lady was our server and nice enough to suggest us to try another red wine after opening the original one we ordered ($55) and my hus tasted but not exactly with genuine happy expression. Her generosity and real pro mind-set rarely seen in any restaurant. So we were surprised. Any fun of mozzarella should try their soft, fluffy, melt in your mouth fresh cut. Great appetizer! Also, their hand made black ink pasta had superb texture that I've never had before. Finally their risotto that came with Pork Chop was lemony rather than creamy-heavy flavor. It was very special and I would try risotto alone next time. So, overall it was a great experience, worth the walk deep into Alphabet avenues betw A&B.

I dined with friends at Cannonau over Memorial Day Weekend this year. The food was outstanding, and the owners were wonderful hosts. The atmosphere is exactly what you would desire in a little Sardinian restaurant in the East Village.
