What People Are Saying About Danal

In Short – Sunflower walls, throw rugs, chandeliers, copper pots and a fireplace, along with a small gift shop tucked near the entrance, make diners feel that they are dining inside some kind of Gallic Crate and Barrel. The quaint charm transitioned from the East Village original to the airier, bi-level space, as did the brunch crowds, who can't live without the famed chocolate chip pancakes and croissant French toast. Lunch and dinner favors classics like coq au vin and steak frites.

Gone downhill

by alisonhall

Wait staff is not helpful, food not fresh. This place used to be so wonderful. What happened? New ownership? Too many other choices in this city to be bothered with this disappointment. Look elsewhere.

Wait staff seemed bothered, mediocre food and they REALLY wanted to turn over the table after an hour

Cute, comfy place with OK food in a good location that was crowded with eager diners.

Our waitress seemed like everyone was a big problem, not a greeting, not a smile (sorry to have bothered you sweetie). Come to think of it, not one of the servers seemed to be in a good mood.......... We enjoyed our table and our company in spite of the 'I could care less waitress'. Our food was average with little flair.

> One thing to watch out for. Our bill for coffee alone for 5 people was $30! We never knew 'french press' was so expensive..... (We won't make that mistake again.) <

~~ Yes, it was Sunday Brunch and yes, we had been at our table for an entire hour & 15 mins (yikes!) but the attitude of the owner? - to be sure we knew it was time to go - was downright rude.~~

We won't be going back and neither will any of our friends. There's too many wonderful places in the village with better food for the same price (or cheaper), with friendly wait staff that don't shove you out the door after an hour, to give this place a second thought.

Umm, did I say we wouldn't be going back?

bad experience - small gray creature

by maplewooddrive

I will begin by saying I have always been a fan of Danal. Love the decor, food is generally good & reasonably priced, etc. However. We had a group of 10 for a birthday dinner and mid way through the meal we spied a small gray creature scuttling across the floor, mere inches from our feet. When we calmly informed the waiter he was beyond aloof, and with a shrug of his shoulders and roll of his eyes said in a monotone voice "Yeah, I think I saw one not long ago, too." As though it were an hourly occurance at the restaurant. Needless to say no discount of any kind was proffered. This was not surprising behavior only because the waiters wandered around the restaurant all night as though stoned and brought us other tables dishes several times and could not manage to get a simple wine order correct. I will not be returning any time soon.

  • Pros: location
  • Cons: small gray creatures running about

They Never Should Have Moved.

by amandaco

Ugh. So depressing to see what was a great little timeless restaurant go so far downhill. My husband and I went to the new location to celebrate our seventh wedding anniversary last night. From the get go, it was just all wrong. The new location has none of he cosiness or charm that the old location had. The owners have decided to pedal Provencal junk in the very front of the restaurant, which is just so tacky. We had to wait for a table even though we had a reservation - the wait wasn't that long but we had to beg for attention while sitting at the bar. The staff were running around looking really confused and worried the entire evening, which gave the place a really weird air. They were all incredibly distracted. We ordered the charcuterie platter as a starter, which they brought and then 10 minutes later when we asked for bread to go with the platter they said oh we are out....(how does a French restaurant run out of bread at 8pm?) They should have taken the platter of the bill at that point, but of course did not. My husbands steak came out cooked well done instead of rare as he had requested and again the reaction to anything we asked for was just total confusion. The food and the service used to be so great, its just so depressing to see what has happened. I think the owners have overshot trying to expand to such a large space and have lost sight of what is important, good service and good food in a comfortable, cozy place that feels like home - what the old Danal was for most of us.

  • Pros: None really
  • Cons: A major disappointment
