Editorial Review for Bar Veloce – by Justine Goodman

In Short
From the name Bar Veloce--which literally means "fast bar"--to the Vespa in the doorway, this compact Soho wine bar seems designed toward speed. However, it's more than just a pit-stop, and despite prompt service, the small but respectable crowd of local Soho bohos don't look the least bit hurried. The railroad apartment-styled space accommodates 10 or so small tables in front, with the bar in the back, and its signature theme is reinforced by the repeating rows of earth-toned wine bottle cutouts that adorn the walls.

Hits: In addition to an extensive selection of wines (30 by the glass, 60 by the bottle), there are several beers on tap as well as a selection of spirits (bourbon, single malts, cognac, rum, etc.) and even some sake.

Misses: It's bar-service only--place your order in back, then relocate to a table.

Insider Tips

Food Served

A menu of Italian-infused treats like hot pressed paninis, meat and cheese plates, and desserts like gelato and tiramisu are served.

Know Before You Go

The menu features wondrously creative descriptions of each wine--"tastes like a freshly popped can of Slazenger tennis balls"--and the gracious employees won't think less of you for mispronouncing wine names or pointing at the item you wish to order.

The Extras

Look closely at your wine glass; it's subtly branded with the "O" from the Veloce logo.
