Tips for The Fitz

February 27, 2008

This modern twist on an Irish hotel bar may be one of midtown's best kept secrets.. In Short
Dark lacquer paneling and scarlet-bound tomes suggest a tucked away library, but that's not to say the Fitzpatrick Hotel bar is stodgy. The vibe is in fact thoroughly modern: A bar area is back-lit in a groovy orange-yellow and rugby matches on flatscreens are beamed in via BBC satellite. Barkeeps with thick brogues keep vacationing Dubliners in holiday mode with sudsy pints of Smithwicks, and most of the local suits--who tend to favor the plush armchairs of the nearby Tea Room--are never the wiser.

Hits: All the warmth of an Irish pub with a dash of good design to boot.

Misses: Seven dollar drafts are hard to stomach during what should be happy hour.
