Neighborhoods: Midtown, Theater District - Times Square
Good Service - Food was over-seasoned and heavy – Waiter was well trained and attentive. Food was not balance. For appetizers, the grilled baby octupus was tender. However, the escargot served with spinach and pastry puff was smothered in cream and I couldn't taste anything else. Bouillabaisse had fresh seafood, but the broth was very salty. Risotto with truffles sauce was too heavy with cream. After a few bites, we couldn't eat anymore.
great place friendly bartender – My husband and I stopped by Saju bistro last Sunday evening for a quick drink before heading home. The atmosphere is very cosy, reminiscent of casual South of France restaurants. Our bartender Sara was a lots of fun she immediately strike up a conversation with us suggested which wine to have, and convinced us to try the food. So I asked my parents to join us for dinner we were sat at a nice table and had a great meal of authentic provencal food. the pre-theater menu is very satisfying and reasonably priced and so is the dinner menu. We will definitely be back for the food, atmosphere and to see our favorite bartender. Thanks
Good food, disappointing service – First, the positives. The location is great. It is convenient to Times Square and the theater district, as well as to my hotel (Sofitel) during a recent stay. The food - blue crab bisque, in particular - was good. The atmosphere was also quite nice. Prices were fair - about $45 for soup, entree, and glass of wine, after tax and tip.
Now, the negatives. The service was very disappointing. As a solo diner, I was placed closer to the entrance. I didn't mind, as I was able to watch the Yankees lose on opening night, but the staff tended to loiter aimlessly in the area, sometimes literally right in front of my table. I actually had to ask once for one of them to move. Also, the wrong entree was brought out to me. I received one apology for the snafu all evening - from the person who brought out the food. Neither the waiter nor the manager, who both walked by me several times, apologized for the error. I didn't mind the mistake, but I did mind them not taking responsibility and showing contrition. Finally, after I paid the bill and got up to leave, neither the manager nor the waiter, who were both within feet of my table, thanked me or bade me a good evening as I walked out.
It was a Monday evening and not at all busy. One wonders if this is their usual modus operandi or if I was just unlucky. Regardless, I do not plan a return visit to the Saju Bistro.
Warm, welcoming atmosphere - great food – I was taken to lunch here a while ago and had a great time. Recently returned for dinner with friends and family. Everyone loved it. The food, the service were all excellent. Great mussels. I had a great hanger steak. A bit pricey due to our wine consumption, but it was worth every penny!! We have a new family favorite.
Great Food, Service & Atmosphere – Went to Saju Bistro for a Pre-Theatre Dinner with four friends. Had a wonderful time, great waiter, delicious food and wine and lovely surroundings. Would highly recommend to all!!!
Some restaurants are so big on atmosphere, they forget about the menu. Not here. – My party stopped by this bistro without recommendation. We saw the inviting atmosphere from the outside, as the restaurant was open to the patio amidst the nice weather. The menu looked good enough, so I assumed the food would be OK but nothing special, as "atmosphere" restaurants tend to have that quality. I was very pleasantly surprised. After sampling a small selection of imported French cheeses as an appetizer, and tasting how superb the goat cheese was, I ordered the goat cheese ravioli with pesto sauce. I was still skeptical, as pesto tends to be overpowered by basil, but after one bite I was in love.
Between the friendly and attentive staff, the nice atmosphere, and the wonderful cuisine, I would definitely recommend this place. Tourists in the franchise-stuffed Times Square should walk the one block over here to get a taste of real French cuisine.
only can comment on the bar experience – i caught the french open final here. the bartender was very polite. the servers also made good conversation. it seems to be a spot for tourists in the area to go to in the morning. the brunch selections seemed appetizing, but i can't comment on them, as i didn't have anything besides a drink or two. the decor is nice. the prices also seem very reasonable. despite being a french bistro, it is not unwelcoming to strangers (not that i think the french are always unwelcoming.) people might be afraid to stop in, but it's worth the short visit.
Delicious Food, Attentive Servers – I've eaten at lot of restaurants in this neighborhood and I found this to be one of the best!
This place feels like you're in Provence, France especially when the weather is warm and the front of the restaurant is open with people eatting,chatting and laughing.
The food is delicious, I've had the pasta as well as the steak. I haven't gone wrong. Get value in the theatre district.
Great Value in the Theatre District – I loved the value and food at Saju Bistro. It is unusual to have such high quality food and a full menu (including seriously fabulous flan for dessert) for the price. I thought the service and wait staff were excellent. We were warmly greeted by the owner who seemed to really care about our experience. A great value in the theatre area. I am going back again. Staff was knowledgably about wines, too.
Just average. Went last week with the girlfriend and the following was poor: – 1. My girlfriend asked the waitress for a recommendation for her main course. The waitress said that she didn't know what to recommend, since she had only tried one of the dishes - poor front of house training.
2. We ordered glasses of Champagne to drink while waiting for our starters, which didn't appear. When the starters arrived, we mentioned the missing Champagne - they apologised and offered us free coffees at the end - but these still appeared on the bill anyway.
3. The food was incredibly salty. I'm not saying this because I'm health conscious - it was just way over-seasoned.
OK, so Saju isn't the most expensive restaurant in New York - but it ain't that cheap either and this mediocre effort certainly doesn't offer value for money - which I guess pretty much sums up a lot of restaurants in New York.
