Editorial Review for Deity – by Laura Norkin
In Short
With a plush banquette area punctuated by couples' nooks and hollowed, ice-filled tables, this former synagogue makes for one classy drinking spot. The religious motif is preserved with back-lit, goddess-themed, stained glass wall-hangings and illuminated Jesus sculptures, but the imagery remains more plucky than disrespectful. Deity's drink menu is as ambitious as its design--40 beers, 400 wines and dozens of specialty cocktails, some identified only by their ingredients. Local Brooklynites may scoff at the Manhattan-high prices (around $14), but a daily happy hour alleviates the blow.
Hits: A unique cheeriness, thanks to artists and owners Caio and Kristine Dunson, who treat patrons like house guests--which isn't far off, they live upstairs.
Misses: The crowd. It might take a higher power to fill a club in this no-man's land off Atlantic Avenue, and with few patrons on non-event nights, Deity remains full of unrecognized potential.

Insider Tips
What to DrinkInventive concoctions like the honey, lemon and rum cocktail are probably great for a cold, but simpler choices like the passion fruit lime margarita tend to work better.
Save MoneyNo credit card minimum means no having to force extra shots down your gullet at last call, and happy hour means 20 percent off all drinks until 9pm daily.
The ExtrasRegular weekly events include the Sunday night Gypsy party when a DJ spins to mostly gay and lesbian revelers, though--as always--everyone is welcome.
Fun FactThe owner's brother, a local contractor, hand-poured the signature hexagonal bar out of the same dyed concrete used on the floors. It's filled with white aggregate stones that he revealed by smoothing the surface with a diamond grinder.

The atmosphere is perfect for that 1st date drink where you just want to sit and chat while having a cocktail. The setting is very romantic and the mood is very chill. The music playing is enough that you can still sit there and have a conversation without having to yell. There is an upstairs bar/lounge and a downstairs lounge/dance area with bars on both floors. The place is beautifully decorated and artfully lit. Very chic/trendy/sexy atmosphere. The Orange Mimosa is awesome. Definitely will be hitting this place up often.

Just happened to see this place listed in Time Out. It's gay on Sundays. Wonder how they're gonna do. I am going this Sunday and will let you know.
