Ms. Sodi needs to learn a few things from her neighboring chefs. Ms. Sodi should eat at neighboring places in the West Village such as Jean George's Perry Street and Mario Batali's Babbo and Lupa where fish is served fresh and wine is stored at the proper temperature. Her recent fluke special was old and fishy and her red wines that we tried were overpriced, bitter and harsh. Yet she charges the same or somewhat higher prices than these neighboring establishments. Ms Sodi needs to correct these problems and bring her prices down or her little bar room will be just that - a run down bar that serves bad wine.
Great place worth checking out in the West Village. We live in the West Village and were happy to see I Sodi open up on Christopher Street, not traditionally a stronghold of high culinary fare. After walking by it a few dozen times and reading an outstanding review in The New Yorker, we finally decided to check it out this past week. Despite high expectations, my wife and I were both really pleased. The restaurant itself is relatively small and has a fun vibe with a familiar feel at the bar that extends the length of the place. The staff is friendly, engaging and unpretentious - they're definitely cultivating a neighborhood feel and they do it successfully. This narrow Tuscan attempts to make its mark among a sea of Italian restaurants with a tightly focused menu and modern-rustic touches like pine wainscoting, a granite and wood bar, and frosted glass accents. Offerings change weekly, but bet on expected classics like artichoke and parmesan salad, salt-baked branzino, asparagus risotto and lasagna with meat or artichoke sauce. Desserts, too, list all the usual suspects--tiramisu, affogato, gelato--with one surprising twist in salame dolce, a "chocolate sausage" dotted with crumbled biscotti.
