An eco-friendly L.E.S. wine bar with Ten Bells's pedigree (it's the younger sister of nearby French restaurant Le Pere Pinard) could be snobby. Fortunately, the attentive staff here showers affection equally on oenophiles and those just looking for someone with whom to share a bottle. The red, whites and sparkling wines scrawled on the chalkboard hail from organic vineyards across the globe, but when it comes to wine, going green doesn't have to be pricey; several options run just $5 a glass.
Hits: Tucked underneath a stairwell, and with design accents like exposed brick and a pressed tin ceiling, it's a Parisian-style hideaway.
Misses: On weekend nights thundering ambient lounge music makes shouting de rigeur--though sharp-eyed drinkers often crowd close enough to read lips.

the place was a nice setup but there are a lot of shady people there. had an engagement get together there. there was a good 20 people there and the bartender allowed anyone to put their drinks on my tab. went to pay my bill at the end and there were a good amount of drinks i never ordered. bartender was half an idiot. also left my bag there and picked it up the following day and someone(i believe it was one of the workers because my friends were there till the place closed) went through it and stole my mp3 player. much better places to go in the city.

My roommate and I call this place "the no-name wine bar" because there are no signs or numbers outside. But it is a gem of a neighborhood spot -- it feels like more of the artsy/noir crowd and it's casual, not pretentious. It always has the right number of people so you feel like it's lively without being overwhelming. Plus the waitors/waitresses are very wine-knowledgeable. It's a place that loves wine and doesn't talk down to you.

Not one to typically venture out myself, but this IS my neighborhood, and this was our third date. So I thought I'd take him to a place I wanted to go to. The syrah was well recommended, and the food was part of the conversation. I loved the coziness.

Food Served:
Cheese and charcuterie from the Essex Street Market pair with any of the 50 rotating wines on the board, but don't overlook mains like the ceviche of the day and duck rillettes, plus raw oysters that cost just $1.25 each from 5pm to 7pm daily.
Look Good:
One should never be so vulgar as to pay the tab in a common cash-for-drink exchange. Instead, bartenders discretely slip folded receipts to their intended, at which point you may settle up.
Fun Fact:
Though the name Ten Bells alludes to a nautical term, owners Yassine Bentaleb and Fabrice Vautrin recall the infamous English pub of the same name, which was said to be the preferred watering hole for Jack the Ripper and his victims.
