Black and red may be an overused motif at this sprawling live music venue/ art gallery/ bar--from the tattoo-style ceiling stencils to the baroque throne-like seats to the church pews--but somehow it works. Elements of kitsch keep it relatable (think foam tables and fake flickering candles), while bowls of peanuts invoke a neighborhood feel. The owners urge that (L)PR isn't a nightclub; it's a classical music-focused venue meant to bring the spontaneity back to art and the substance back to nightlife. Tag-team bookers ensure a mix of musical genres grace the stage on any given night, be it…
Great sound, great space, great music
by AWongTime at Citysearch
I have been here 5 times over the last few months and seen some of the best shows I've seen in awhile. (Particularly Sebastien Tellier) The sound is great, the staff is friendly, and they have really great taste in music.
I was also here for a friend's birthday in the cool bar next door and they treated us great (she got a free bottle for her friends to enjoy.)
I highly recommend this spot. Nice yo have great live music back in the Village
- Pros: great music, great drinks
- Cons: crowded
awesome sound, good drinks, amazing bands
by ethank at Citysearch
i went to le poisson rouge for the first time ever to see school of seven bells and fujiya and miyagi awhile back, and have to say, it was one of the best shows i've seen in a long time. i showed up early to buy a ticket because i knew it would sell out and while we waited for the doors to open we sat in the bar and had some of the best cocktails i've had in a music venue. despite looking like a williamsburg hipster who could care less, the bartender was friendly and attentive. the show itself was great, and even though it was packed, the security staff were polite and organized. we had to wait a while to get drinks at the bar because the show was sold out, but the waitstaff wasn't frazzled at all and served us with a smile. the sound was amazing, school of seven bells sounded perfect and almost outdid fujiya and miyagi. finally, there's a new club that puts on great shows with awesome indie bands that doesn't serve flat beer or crappy shot-and-a-PBR combos.
- Pros: great concerts, friendly staff, accessible neighborhood
- Cons: crowded bar
