In Short
Mark Amadei and Andrew Glassberg, the guys behind Cafeteria in Chelsea, have created a space about as far from the classic, old-school deli as possible. Sure, it offers pastrami sandwiches and matzo ball soup, but most delis don't serve halibut carpaccio, Cantonese-style Atlantic salmon and Moroccan couscous. Menu covers shot by hipster icon Terry Richardson, a pop art-filled, glass-roofed downstairs lounge, and sleek Eames chairs in the dining room create an environment that's beyond hip--a winning formula, apparently, as evidenced by the buzzing throng of Nolita diners.

Today I had lunch there and my bill was $20.29. I gave the waiter $40.00 cash and he returned with $10 in singles. When I asked why I had been short changed he simply replied that there was no "change" in the registers. When I asked how a restaurant could have not cash in the register (it was 3 PM and the restaurant opens around 10 AM) he offered to take $1 out of his pocket. Needless to say I refused and short changed his tip by 71 cents. I was so angry and stormed out and didn't even try to get the manager to help. I live in the neighbor and I eat there twice a week! To be treated like this is astonishing even if I wasn't a regular. Guess I will think twice the next time I want to eat out.

I live close by and just went to the restaurant for the second time since it opened. What a drastic difference from the first time I went here (about 3 months ago). The food was great, service was unbeatable and there was a good social vibe in the room. Even better is that the food is very reasonably priced. I HIGHLY RECCOMEND COMING HERE for either a casual Sunday brunch, a fun dinner with friends or a nightcap.

This place does not fit into soho and neither does the food. Are you serious? Popcorn shrimp? I couldn't find halibut carpaccio on the menu, by the way, so I don't know what the editorial review was talking about. The atmosphere was stuffy, like a weird version of cafeteria. The design was pretty but also kind of annoying. I had to GET UP FROM MY TABLE in order for another couple to sit on the bench about a millimeter away from me. If you like being stuffed into an architectural disaster and you like mediocre diner food, come here. Good drinks, but that's about it. Places like this make me sad. All hype. & watch out for the b&t, they're everywhere.
