What People Are Saying About Forge

Featured Review

Josh Ozersky

Contributor

In Short – In the 80s, Larry Forgione was considered one of the fathers of the so-called New American cooking, and at Forge, his son Marc proves to be a chip off the old block. His restaurant, which leans heavily on beams and candles, and other such shortcuts to seduction, isn't primarily interested in gastronomic history though: It's mostly a place aimed at producing novel but familiar, well-executed food in a vaguely Allen & Delancey-like setting. And this it does.

Editor's Tips

Know Before You Go:
The most popular dish, at least in the early going, was the chicken nuggets, which are much, much better than they sound.
ambiance
100.0% positive
  1. The atmosphere is calming, the staff from host to server is both attentive and pleasant and the food is outstanding!
  2. Walking by, my husband and I always peeked in and thought the candle lit interior was both inviting and romantic.
  3. The ambiance is cozy and warm.
dessert
50.0% positive
  1. The highly anticipated Banana Souffle in Peanut Butter Sauce dessert (15-min wait) was a little disappointing though; I could still taste the crystallized sugar although I liked that the souffle was light and fluffy.
  2. We had some great wines and finished with a sorbet combination dessert.

  1. The entire experience from the service, to the wine to the food was excellent.

food quality

  1. It was a refreshing spoon of shrimp ceviche and a creamy foam starter.
  2. We had a yellowtail tartare appetizer which was delicious, then moved on to a roasted chicken dish for two that was quite simply the best chicken I've ever tasted.
  3. Our fish entrees were outstanding.
  4. The salmon was enveloped in a tasty soft polenta while the sea bass was delightful and perfectly balanced by the sauce.
  5. The entire experience from the service, to the wine to the food was excellent.
  6. Given the current state of the economy and the lack of humility and customer service at most restaurants in the city, Forge was a breath of fresh air.
  7. The atmosphere is calming, the staff from host to server is both attentive and pleasant and the food is outstanding!
  8. We've been to almost every restaurant in Tribeca and Forge has won the prize for best meal hands down.
  9. Even though the waiter recommended the sea bass over the salmon, I thought the latter won over the crispy sea bass, which was equally delicious.
  10. The food was poor to average, certainly not what you would expect at these prices.
  11. The food was first rate, although a bit expensive for the portion size, the staff was warm and attentive and the lighting/mood made for an experience worth repeating.
  12. breath of fresh air!

  3. The entire experience from the service, to the wine to the food was excellent.
  4. Given the current state of the economy and the lack of humility and customer service at most restaurants in the city, Forge was a breath of fresh air.
  5. The atmosphere is calming, the staff from host to server is both attentive and pleasant and the food is outstanding!
  6. After asking to move (which they allowed with little issue) the waitress gave us the cold shoulder for the next 30 minutes.

I'm very,very sad...

...because "Forge" is exactly the kind of restaurant that I love - great atmosphere, good service, good food (albeit pricey). I am a bit of a foodie, and love to explore restaurants like Forge with other friends who also don't mind dropping $$$ on a good food experience. But Forge makes the fatal flaw so many other restaurants make - and I don't think they quite get how simple it is to avoid and just how angry it makes many patrons. I ordered a glass of red wine - at $15.00 a glass - and when the waitress poured the glass at our table and then walked away, my dinner companion and I looked at the glass and said - "Did she go to get a new bottle? Did she run out of wine? Surely, she's coming back to fill up the rest of my glass." But sadly, that was not the case. She was a lovely girl, and when I explained that I am not cheap and do not mind dropping money in a good restaurant, but that the portion they pour is ridiculous, she went into a monologue about how it just looked small because the size of the glass is bigger because they love those glasses which give the drinker a better wine experience, blah, blah, blah. So - before I even got to order my food, I was already pissed off and knew that this would be my last visit to Forge. My meal came and both appetizer and main course were very good - not exceptional - but very good. Would I have come back and brought other friends? Yes. Would I have recommended this place to other people? Yes. But being stingy with wine lost them my patronage and recommendation. So, here is the lesson to the Managers of Forge and other such restaurants: 1. Filling up a glass of wine goes a long way and cost you very little (and I spent many years working in restaurants, so you and I both know this to be true). 2. Don't have the nerve to charge $15.00 for a glass of wine and have to explain to a patron that the splash in their glass just looks small - respect my intelligence. 3. I am more likely to order a second glass if the wine were priced in the $10.00 range - making your sale $20.00 as opposed to only $15.00 for one glass. 4. If your fabulous glasses make it look like you've filled my glass under the quarter mark, get rid of those glasses.

5. This review should be more about the yummy sauce under the scallops, etc. but I am so turned off by my experience with the wine that I really don't feel like writing about it now.

Finally - if this wine thing doesn't bother you as a consumer, then definitely try Forge - everything else was very good. As for me - there are too many other restaurants in this city I love who know how to fill a glass - and that's where I'll be dropping my $$$.

Horrible Horrible Horrible

by pescober

I live in Tribeca and pass by this restaurant on my way to the gym all the time. I have always been curious about it. Today was such a beautiful day outside that me and my boyfriend, who eat out all the time, decided to try it. We ordered the ravioli as an appetizer, and I had the lamb chop and he had the strip steak. Tell me how it took 1 hour for the food to come out. The ravioli looked like a chef literally just slapped on few chunks of beef on a plate and called it a day ($14). THen our main course came out and the strip was literally 3 pices of small meat and carrots ($34). My lamb ($36) was horrible and salty!!! two small pieces. I went home starving and now cooking a home cooked meal :(

VERY Disappointed!

by KimCollen

I live in Tribeca, and have wanted to eat at Marc Forgione (Forge) for a while, now that its truffle season, I figured I would give it try.....WHAT A DISAPOINTMENT. The Sous Chef dropped the $400+ truffle on the ground...and then went back to 'get me a new one'....he shaved the truffle on my egg concoction in a jar...it essentially was tasteless. No essence of truffle, nothing....not even a slight truffle finish. Perhaps it was old...dried out... The wine pour was minimal, not very impressed. Won't go back not really worthy.....

Consistently Great Food!

by silverblue , Citysearch Contributor

This is my second time here and I love it even more! As always, the hot bread brushed with clarified butter was an appetizer teaser. The waiter bought out an amuse bouche, which we were pleasantly surprised with. It was a refreshing spoon of shrimp ceviche and a creamy foam starter. We ordered the oxtail mac and cheese yet again because it was so good it didn't even taste like m+c!! Our fish entrees were outstanding. Even though the waiter recommended the sea bass over the salmon, I thought the latter won over the crispy sea bass, which was equally delicious. The salmon was enveloped in a tasty soft polenta while the sea bass was delightful and perfectly balanced by the sauce. The highly anticipated Banana Souffle in Peanut Butter Sauce dessert (15-min wait) was a little disappointing though; I could still taste the crystallized sugar although I liked that the souffle was light and fluffy. It could have been way better though. Overall, it was a memorable experience and I would highly recommend it for any occasion!

  • Pros: Atmosphere, Delicious Hot Buns & Fish Entrees
  • Cons: Service can be spotty, Banana Souffle
