“City Winery has all of the makings to be a great place to listen to music: great acoustics, reasonably priced good food and wine but it needs to be able to get the wine and the food to the patrons.”

Sardine City -- It Stinks in Many Ways. Went last night to see Fab Faux but we were unable to enjoy the show because the entire show was double seated -- twice as many people are crammed onto each table than they were originally designed for !!! How would you like to share a tiny two-seat table with two other strangers? Then cram as many of these two seater tables on top of each other that you can fit into the place and fill each of em up with four people. Its like seeing a concert on a rush hour subway train. You could not pay enough me to go back there - don't waste your money. or more importantly, your time.
Live Music, full Winery and yummy food!!. I had such a great time at city winery last night. Everytime I go there I am always greeted with a smile from the waitstaff. The seating is spacious and my drinks always arrive quickly. They have wine on tap which is quite unusual for NY. Forget the tap beer, wine is where its at!!! I saw the epic Natalie Cole there, and Lisa Loeb is basically a resident ; ) If you love delightful music, seek happiness and pleasure City WInery is the place to be.
Only for the music!. if there were negative stars i would give them. the ony reason to go to this place is if you want to see the show. my husband and i saw a show for valentine's day. the promotional sounds just about right. frank sinatra cover band, three course meal, and wine tasting throughout the night. The music was great! If it wasnt for the singer we would have walked out. he was excellent. the rest .... well to start with the food is laughable. The owner/manager made a big show of saying how the wine was paired to the food in a way that he thought would compliment the meal and the grape. The risotto was uncooked glop. The chicken was a chicken finger with capers on top. No veg. No accompaniment. My husband's pasta dish looked like the lunch lady served it and tasted worse than that. The dessert was actually inedible. The nerve of this place. On top of it all, out of all of the various servers that were attending to our table only one was worth the job that he had. And i felt bad for him because he had to do a lot to keep up with the others who just had no idea how to do their job. Unless you know the act and really want to support some local talent, spend your time and money elsewhere.
Great atmosphere, fantastic music.
I've been here about 5 times now (previously for early dinners on the way to somewhere else, pizza and mezze is always good, nice salads) but last night was the first sat night experience.
Before we got there I had good vibes - their booking system is just fab - you can clearly see the layout and chose your seats, which comforts the control freaks in my family. So there was no panic about arriving, we knew exactly where we were going to sit.
The food was good (the mini burgers were delicious) and the wine was excellent. The service was good - not obtrusive, but making sure you had enough attention.
But the music is why we came, and the sound is terrific, every seat really has good sightlines, and we got to see Suzanne Vega in a really intimate, easy setting. The place was absolutely full, but no drunks, no obnoxious loud tables, everyone there just to chill and have a good time. Very civilized. I had a really great night.
We will def. come back.
Good Private Room. I recently booked a private party at City Winery and was quite impressed. The Private room is gorgeous with a nice view of their wine room. Most importantly, the events staff was very easy to work with. The prices were reasonable and it was not a hassle to get 10+ people together. We had our own private wine man for the evening which was a nice support. The food was mixed. Great cheese plate, excellent shrimp skewers, and tasty polenta cakes. The chicken skewers were more sesame than chicken and the scallops with bacon just weren't crispy enough to work. Beyond that, great space. We didn't see a band but I've heard good things. My only suggestions would be to work on the food a bit and people will flock to this place! Give it a try!
This is the worst wine bar/restaurant I have ever been to in the City. And that says a lot.
And I got sick that evening when I saw a Rodent...not a something that rhymes with house... something that rhymes with bat
Great music venue. City Winery has all of the makings to be a great place to listen to music: great acoustics, reasonably priced good food and wine but it needs to be able to get the wine and the food to the patrons. Hire more waitstaff!! It took about 20 minutes to get the waiter's attention to order a bottle of wine and he came back 15 minutes later to tell us he was out of the wine we ordered, I said you should've just brought us something comparable. So we ordered another bottle and he came back 10 minutes later to tell us they were out of that also and didn't bring something comparable. At that point we said skip it. But the music was great and there were some surprise appearances. Nice bonus.
Do NOT go here.
This is the worst wine bar/restaurant I have ever been to. The waiter knew nothing about the wines he was serving us. And I got sick that evening from the food. There was supposed to be a "wine seminar" included in our pre-fixe dinner and it was basically the manager giving us a sales pitch on why we should have events at the venue.
There was no music the evening we went, so can't comment on that. But for a place that makes its own wine, you'd think the wait staff would know something about the wine they are serving!
Horrible food, horrible service and overpriced! The management was not concerned at all that I got sick at his restaurant.
There are plenty of other wine bars in the city to go to - definitely SKIP this one!
Be aware of where you sit during a performance..
Went to see M. Doughty at the City Winery recently. We made sure to get seats as close to the front as possible. When we got there we found we were indeed at the front. However, we were facing away from the stage looking at the bar. I could not turn my my chair around because the seats and tables were so close together. My neck was hurting before I got to the Winery, but after 15 minutes of turning my neck around like a car wreck rubbernecker, it hurt even more.
Also when we told the Maitre'De our situation, she suggested we move to a seat clear across the room with most of the audience in front of us. Her suggested accommodation would have been even worse, which is not an accommodation.
Also the wine was $11 a glass. I thought wineries were supposed to have cheaper wine. I drink beer which no one else seemed to be doing. Also the food is typical higher end, higher priced Manhattan.
New Yorks BEST new music venue.
Music in NYC grows up. This is a perfectly thought out - overall superb music food and wine experience. No longer do I have to suffer the inconvenience of my youth fighting crowds and drinking bad beer to hear the best music life has to offer. The sound system is perfect - this is the best venue you could ever dream of - its better than having a concert in your living room (the food is better)
Goodbye KF we will miss you but the future looks great!!!!
