Wonderful East Village Hair Cut.
I love this East Village hair salon, all of the stylists are nice, and actually LISTEN to what you want and give you the hair cut you want (not the one they want to cut). They are very fairly priced, it's a nice atmosphere, and they offer you a drink if you want one (wine, hot toddies!)
My favourite stylist there is Daniel, he has a really calming presence - if you are like me and have hair stylist phobia, go see Daniel.
An immeadiate Repeat Customer!. I had a wonderful time with Maria! She spent so much time on my hair and it was worth every moment! She has a great attention to detail and I will be back!
Wonderful exerience!. I had been looking for that special little place where I could become a regular. For years I been getting my haircut at the place, but with a revolving door of stylists. Then a friend working in NYC for the summer mentioned her experience trying out Birds and Fellas. Her glowing recommendation easily convinced me that I might just find that gem of a place I had been seeking. I made an appointment online (how convenient!) and as soon as I walked in, I knew I was going to have a great experience. Then I got the best haircut of my life (my hair has been thanking me all month long). Christine took great care of me - do make an appointment with her if you want to work with someone who listens and knows exactly what she's doing. Plus, we had a great time chatting about great haunts in the East Village and the Lower East Side. Trust me - this place is a true gem and so is Christine!
Fun place where the stylists know what's up. Friendly, fun, knowledgable, affordable... and i love my haircut. They have jenga and a banana phone to entertain you during any downtime. Great promotions... my haircut came with a free cupcake from Butter Lane down the block. YUM. With all the bells and whistles I thought surely they were trying to redeem themselves from another flaw somewhere but I have yet to find it and did I say... I love my haircut??? Thank you Michael and Christine!!!
Very solid nice haircut and experience overall!.
Very solid nice haircut and experience overall!
I called in for a last-minute haircut on Monday late-afternoon. They were able to get me in a 7pm (I've called before a few times and they hadn't been able to accomodate me previously). Their online reservation system hasn't worked for at least a month now, which is annoying.
I got a Groupon for about $35 for a wash/cut/blow-dry. They were giving out 20% off coupons for the next appointment, but I didn't get one (presumably bc of my groupon).
I wanted Jamie Lynn due to all the rave reviews, but Jennifer Luna was available. I was a little skeptical at first; she seems young, VERY bubbly, and I just wasn't sure how experienced she was. But I came in at 7pm and watched her finish up her last client, and her hair looked very nice. (by the way, they ran about 20min behind schedule).
Jennifer is super-nice; normally I'm not in the mood to talk to anyone, but she was great and fun to talk to! I was offered a free beverage but I declined (I just wasn't in the mood).
Jennifer washed my hair wonderfully! I have REALLY thick and very long Korean wavy hair that tangles like a rat's nest; she managed my hair easily and painlessly (unlike a lot of other places) and made it a pleasant experience! The scalp massage was awesome too :)
Then for the cut. I normally have a bunch of pictures to show, but I didn't have them on me. I talked her thru what I wanted, and she pretty much nailed it! I really only got a 2-inch trim and kept my hair the same style, but she got it very right. Thank goodness, no razor-useage for my cut!
The blow-out was very straight-forward, pretty painless and rather quick; all-in-all my appointment took about 40min.
The salon is definitely "cozy"; 3 stations, and only 2 were being used. There was no receptionist; just Jamie Lynn and Jennifer to handle everything. But overall business ran smoothly.
I like my haircut very much, so it's good to know I have a place to go. That being said, it also isn't WOWing me (and being nestled in the heart of Alphabet City it ain't the most convenient to get to) so I may venture to try new places before I come back, depending on the deals I find.
I hope this helped!
A Gem!. Birds and Fellas hits the right balance of being a modern, creative salon without the pretentious attitude or absurd price tags. They have capable stylists that listen to what you want and can deliver, and an amazing understanding of customer service. Theresa has done wonders with styling and blowing out my hair, which is a feat because it is so thick and unruly. I also love that the owner is creative in offering regular perks to his customers, and does a great job encouraging friend referrals (I'm a marketing nerd, so I can appreciate the power of word-of-mouth!). If you're jaded with the NYC salon experience, or just want to try something new, I promise you won't be disappointed!
Cool haircut with warm attitude. This tiny East Village salon is worth a visit...they really know how to take care of you. When you arrive you get a drink to unwind. They're nice but not too chatty. And you get a great hair cut too!
Great Stylist!.
I am always really nervous about getting my hair cut after one bad experience that I had a while ago where my hair was cut way too short.
Birds & Fellas is such a cute place, it's tiny but really nice inside and definitely a very comfortable atmosphere! Jamielynn cut and colored my hair. She listened to EXACTLY what I said and knew exactly what I wanted. She was so good about making sure that she didn't do anything I wasn't comfortable with, and told me exactly what she was going to do and when. She was such a sweet heart and really did such a great job.
I was so happy with the service and will definitely be going back next time I need a hair cut. I would recommend Birds & Fellas to anyone who is in need of a haircut/color!
For swank hair and a glass of wine.
Before a night of drinks or music in the Tompkins Square Park environs, I hit up Birds and Fellas to catch up with my stylist and discuss the latest great idea to try on my head.
Every few weeks, I'll drop by the cozy, brick-faced salon and bring in a picture with me. Over a glass of wine and chillax music, Jamielynn will advise me whether the style I want can work with me and my difficult hair.
Jamielynn is fantastic, the most talented cutter I've come across in my years here in the city! My thick, wiry hair is tough to tame and color. I'm glad I found the right person for HELP! A warm-hearted and funny stylist to guide me in the right way.
We've done long layers to short razoring, we've colored blonde-to-brown highlights and later when I was in the mood, red panels for a change. Once Jamielynn's done, I leave ready to go out, although it's hard to leave, because the salon is so fun.
Highly recommended, from a long term customer.
Cheers!
God Bless Theresa!.
I adore Theresa... she is one of the best stylists I've ever had. She seems to know what I want even when I don't. And she can even save a horrifying haircut and matching bad color done by someone else!!! I knew I shouldn't have strayed and she didn't judge me for it either!
Additionally, they seem to always be able to fit me in. And when I needed tips for new products, she actually suggest a $4 drugstore brand that did the trick!
