Opened in 1982, Lebanese-born specialist Ouidad's friendly, buzzing salon boasts a sun-dappled terrace and welcomes a steady stream of wavy-haired and celebrity clients. The walls are plastered with gilt-framed magazine articles featuring Ouidad's expert advice for the Rapunzel-haired set. – – The Services – Though an appointment with the curl guru herself is hard to come by, her personally trained team--fully versed in Ouidad's revolutionary…

  1. While everyone on the staff was very friendly -- I especially liked her assistant -- and it was fun being in a salon with only fellow curly-haired women, I was ultimately disappointed with my haircuts.

blah haircut, though fun experience

by sukyanna

I tried the Ouidad Salon after my mom bought me a present of a trial size bag of the ouidad hair products.

I LOVE the ouidad hair products! The heat and humidity gel is awesome- it can keep my hair from frizzing almost every day.

So I was super excited to go to the salon that was known for dealing with curly hair. The price scared me a little bit- in brooklyn I'm used to paying closer to $60 for a cut, but at Ouidad, it's more like $120 and up, but I decided having a great cut would be worth it.

My experience at the salon was fine, even a bit fun at times. It was fun being in a place with only other people who had curly hair!! However, I was constantly passed back and forth between two people, making me feel like I didn't really have a connection with the woman who was cutting. I am growing my hair out, and ask for more shape and body. She took about 4 minutes to cut all of my wildly big and long hair. It didn't seem like enough time cutting to create more body, but I was suddenly shuffled off to another person, so I didn't get to tell her.

The shampoo session and blow dry session was great, with one of the assistants, because she told me what she was doing the whole time, and it was like getting a lesson in how to take care of your curly hair.

However, I have never been able to duplicate the curls they produced that day, and my haircut has absolutely NO body, it just hangs off my scalp. I've had much much better $60 haircuts in brooklyn.

When I left the salon, I bought all the products, had to tip two people almost equally, paid for a very expensive haircut, and ended up spending over $220.

I haven't been happy with my cut except for that first day.

I won't be going back.

Why Curly Girls Love Their Hair.

by DeeNigma , Citysearch Contributor

As a non-profit director, and mother of a teenager about to leave for college, I can't always justify my beauty purchases, but when it comes to Ouidad...

I can.

I am sure Ouidad created the bible on curly hair, and if she didn't, I'm still giving her credit for it.

15 years ago, my then-boss told me that I would forever be amazed at this artist's work - she was right. I've even used just about all of her products and each one makes me happy, every time I use them (anti-humidity gel...can't beat this product in the summer).

  • Pros: Completely NOT over-hyped!
  • Cons: A little expensive, but it is your hair!

so i recently went to ouidad after searching the internet like crazy! i had a early appointment before work..i figured if anyone will tell me the truth after a cut its my co-workers. i was set up to see melissa but when i got there they told me that she called out sick and that another stylist alex had to take me..i could care less i just needed help. she sat me down and dicussed what we were going to do. she saw and understood the problems i felt. after a long consult and she cut and did a styling demo on me and set me home with a booklet with everything to recreate it at home its been 3 weeks and i love it still!! my co worker noticed right away and sayed this is the best i have looked in a long time..gee thanks!!

  • Pros: soft and touchable
  • Cons: wish i did my deep treatment there

Love their work

by Annalee

I was a little worried after reading some of the reviews on here about the appointment I had booked....I shouldn't have been.

I just got home from my afternoon at the salon and I just absolutely LOVE my new haircut. I saw Melissa and she was really helpful in telling me exactly how to handle my very curly hair. She talked to me as she was cutting and styling so that I would know what to do once I got home and had to do this myself. A lot of the reviews here said that the stylists were pushy about buying the Ouidad products, but I did not have this problem. Melissa told me about the products that she was using, but never pushed me into buying anything. Also people were saying how they came out of the salon with crunchy hair. My hair is so soft. She only used three products on me. A leave in conditioner, gel and a pomade. At first it did seem like she was putting in a lot of gel, but after seeing the affect and the way my hair responded to what she was doing, it really didn't matter.

All of the staff there were very friendly asking if I wanted something to drink and making sure that I was comfortable the entire time I was there.

The only thing I did not like about the salon was the price. I paid $125.00 for my cut. I have never paid that much for a haircut in my life. Was it worth it?...yes, most definately and I would do it again in a heartbeat. The only reason I did not give 5 stars was because of the price. Everything else was wonderful

  • Pros: Friendly and knowledable staff
  • Cons: Price

so i called last minute today and booked an appt. i was so nervous nut my friend convinced me too. so i called and i got alex. i was even more nervous because i read a bad review on here about how ends ended frizzy.. but i was being dragged. so she sat me down for a consultation and really listened to me. i told he about the review and she said that frizz is part of the condition of your hair no the cut ask any chemist or stylist they will all tell you that. ok. then she continued to explain what she was gonna do and taught me so much along the way. no other stylist ever did that ..or said what i was gonna say before it came out of my mouth.. the end result was great!! she taught me how to style my hair and how to sleep on it and gave me a booklet to take home to replicate! i love her for making me love my hair again...thanks alex!! i strongly urge you to to go ...if your nervous just go in for a consult there free! which i didnt no that sure would have saved alot of kicking and screaming along the was

  • Pros: finally got what i was looking for
  • Cons: not open sat in summer
