Barely a trace of Citrine's rock bar predecessor, Snitch, is left; the space--now more trendy and modern--seems more suitable to its Chelsea neighborhood. Beyond the velvet-rope guarded door, low resting leather banquettes are offset by tall dramatic curtains which drape from the ceiling in back. Bright lights (some neon) reflect off the white-washed, exposed brick walls, illuminating a crowd of youngish club-goers. Patrons lounge around, scope the scene or dance to music spun by a rotating cast of celebrity DJs. Meanwhile, the appropriately attentive wait staff scurries about, catering to…

Make sure to bee in your heels and flirt with Clark. You are going to have a great night! I had never been and went for a friends birthday... i danced so much my legs were sore the next day! The music was great, and everyone seemed to be partying it up.

  • Pros: great energy in the space, always dance

Worse Experience in NY

by kamixnamja at Citysearch

A friend had her wedding afterparty at this venue this past weekend, and it was a much shorter night than expected. We didn't have any issues with the bouncers like many of the others here, but perhaps that was because we were on the list for the party.

We got there around midnight on Saturday and it wasn't too crowded. The space, though small, was decorated pretty well.

I got to the bar and ordered a few beers ($8 each) and paid in cash, remembering to tip the bartender. That's pretty much where all the positives of the night ended.

The newlyweds came by so I ordered a round of Goose shots (straight, unchilled) with a couple of OJ backs. For this one, I decided to pay with my credit card.

BIG MISTAKE. The shots themselves were $15. Although a bit pricey, I was ok with that. I completely understand that you pay more for shots at nicer places. However, she also charged me $6 EACH for the two orange juice backs. I thought it may have just been a mistake so I asked politely, "Do you usually charge for juice backs?" She replies "Uh... Always", and turns away as if it was the most ridiculous thing she had heard.

Then, as I go to sign my credit card slip, I notice that 20% gratuity was added. WHAT??? It wasn't as if I wasn't tipping previously, so I imagine it's just their ridiculous policy to grat all credit card payments. I looked around to see if such a policy was posted anywhere, but it was not.

I put a nice line through "Additional Tip" and returned the slip. I was tempted to be a smartass and ask her for a Goose and OJ, with the OJ on the side, but if she was going to grat me 20% for simply pouring out shots, who knew how much it would be for actually having to make something.

Needless to say, I am never going back.

I recommend anybody else reading this do the same.

  • Cons: Small space, pricey drinks, etc

The Details on Citrine

Fun Fact:

Don't rack your brain over the meaning of the bar's name; supposedly there isn't any. The owners simply thought "Citrine" had a nice ring.

When to Go:

In keeping with its goal of achieving an uber-chic image, there's a velvet rope and an overly intimidating bouncer at the door. Heading over early is your best bet if you want to avoid a line.
